The 1876–77 Scottish Districts season is a record of all the rugby union matches for Scotland's district teams. It includes the Inter-City fixture between Glasgow District and Edinburgh District; and the East of Scotland District versus West of Scotland District trial match. 1875–76 Scottish Districts Season
The 1875-76 Scottish Districts season is a record of all the rugby union matches played by Scotland's district teams. It includes the Inter-City fixtures between Glasgow District (rugby union), Glasgow District and Edinburgh District (rugby union), Edinburgh District; and the East of Scotland District (rugby union), East of Scotland District versus West of Scotland District (rugby union), West of Scotland District trial match. History The first Inter-City match of the season was played under the 20-a-side rules. Like many Inter-City matches before, this produced a nil-nil draw. It was noticed that this format drew fewer spectators. During the match Glasgow District (rugby union), Glasgow District's Malcolm Cross was seriously injured and had to be stretchered from the ground. In 1876, it was realised that fewer players on the park might increase the chances of teams scoring. The 1877–78 Scottish Districts season is a record of all the rugby union matches for Scotland's district teams. It includes the Inter-City fixture between Glasgow District (rugby union), Glasgow District and Edinburgh District (rugby union), Edinburgh District; and the East of Scotland District (rugby union), East of Scotland District versus West of Scotland District (rugby union), West of Scotland District trial match. History The Inter-City match was won by a drop goal. After last season's defeat at the hands of Edinburgh District, the East of Scotland District (rugby union), East of Scotland District decided to play its own trial match to better determine its players for the upcoming match against Edinburgh. Glasgow District (rugby Union)
Glasgow District is a Scottish amateur rugby union team which plays in the amateur Scottish Inter-District Championship. The side evolved into the professional provincial side Glasgow Warriors when the Scottish Rugby Union embraced professionalism. However the amateur district is still used for the representation of amateur players in the Inter-District Championship; and this amateur championship guides the selection of Scotland Club XV international players. Founded in 1872 Glasgow District was a select provincial amateur rugby union team that drew its players mainly from the Greater Glasgow area, as well as others from the rest of the west of Scotland; roughly corresponding to the old Strathclyde regional council area. Edinburgh District is a Scottish amateur rugby union team which plays in the amateur Scottish Inter-District Championship. It draws its players mainly from the Edinburgh area, as well as others from the rest of east central Scotland; roughly corresponding to the old Lothian regional council area. Hamilton Crescent
Hamilton Crescent is a cricket ground in the Partick area of Glasgow, Scotland, which is the home of the West of Scotland Cricket Club. It was previously also used for association football and hosted the first international football match in 1872, between Scotland and England. Cricket Cricket has been played at Hamilton Crescent since at least 1862, when it hosted a Gentlemen v Players fixture. Beginning in the 1870s it regularly hosted touring Marylebone Cricket Club teams as well as tour matches against visiting international sides such as Australia, South Africa, New Zealand. The inaugural first-class cricket match at the ground was a Scotland versus Ireland fixture in 1911. In total Hamilton Crescent hosted 20 first-class matches between 1911 and 1994. John Smith (footballer, Born 1855)
John Smith (12 August 1855 – 16 November 1934) was a Scottish footballer of the 1870s and 1880s. He is also notable for playing rugby union and was a member of the first British Lions team that toured Australia and New Zealand in 1888. Football career Club career Smith began playing football at Mauchline F.C. before transferring to Edinburgh University while he studied. After completing his studies in the early 1880s he joined Queen's Park, where he won the Scottish Cup in 1881, 1882 and 1884. He became the first player to score a hat-trick in a Scottish Cup final when he scored all three of Queen's Park's goals in the 1881 final replay against Dumbarton. He was not selected to play in the 1882 final and no match took place in 1884 – Queen's Park were awarded the trophy after Vale of Leven failed to appear. Edward Innes Pocock
Edward Innes Pocock (3 December 1855 – 14 January 1905) was a Scotland international rugby union player. Playing at three-quarters, Pocock gained two caps for Scotland while representing Edinburgh Wanderers at club level. A soldier by profession, he served in Cecil Rhodes' Pioneer Column. On leaving the army he became a civil servant holding several posts as Mining Commissioner in various districts of Rhodesia. Early history Pocock was born in Clifton, Bristol in 1855, the son of Rev. Nicholas Pocock and his wife Edith. Pocock's Great-grandfather was marine artist Captain Nicholas Pocock, while his younger brother Reginald Innes Pocock was a notable zoologist. Pocock was educated at Clifton College from 1872 to 1875 and after leaving school he joined the British Army, being posted to Edinburgh.
