Martin Hammerich
Martin Johannes Hammerich (4 December 1811 – 20 September 1881) was a Danish art historian, educator, author and translator. He was part of the National Liberal movement and a member of the 1848 Danish Constituent Assembly. He was headmaster of Borgerdydskolerne from 1842 to 1867. Early life and education Hammerich was born in Copenhagen, the son of merchant Johannes Hammerich (1777–1852) and Meta Magdalena Adolph (1777–1823). He was the brother of theologian and historian Frederik Hammerich (1809–1877) and the father of engineer Holger Hammerich (1845–1915). He grew up in a wealthy home, graduating from Borgerdydskolerne in Christianshavn in 1828. He then enrolled at the University of Copenhagen where he won the 2nd prize for a paper on freedmen in Ancient Rome before graduating in theology in 1833. Thomas Potter (industrialist)
Thomas Potter (24 May 1745 – 12 October 1811) was a Danish industrialist and merchant who founded the first iron foundry in Denmark at Christianshavn in Copenhagen in 1785. The Potter House, his former home overlooking Christianshavn Canal in Christianshavn, now also known as the Brøste House after a later owner, is now listed on the Danish registry of protected buildings and places. Career Born in Edinburgh to unknown parents, Thomas Potter came to Copenhagen at an early age where he obtained a royal licence to establish an iron foundry on rented land at Appelbys Plads in 1769. In 1771, his license was expanded to comprise all sorts of brass and iron products, forged as well as cast. In 1779, Potter acquired a lot fronting Christianshavn Canal, constructing the Potter House in 1785. It had offices on the ground floor, packing in the cellar and his residence on the first floor. Cathrine Marie Møller
Cathrine Marie Møller (1744–1811) was a Danish embroidery artist, credited with introducing a method of creating light and shadow within embroidery to Denmark. In 1790, she became the second woman inducted into the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Early life Møller was born to Hans Christian Møller and Maren Bølling. At the age of seven she became the ward of her maternal uncle, who had her educated in textile works. After her confirmation, she supported herself as a lady's companion and made embroidery work for money. She also learned to draw to make her needle work easier. Embroidery In 1780, Møller became a part of the household of F.A. Müller, who had a large collection of engravings, which reportedly inspired her in her innovation within the art of embroidery. By using black and grey, she created light and shadow within the embroidery images. Frédéric De Coninck
Frédéric de Coninck (2 December 1740 – 4 September 1811) was a Dutch merchant and shipowner active in Copenhagen, Denmark. Biography Frédéric de Coninck was born at The Hague in the Netherlands. In 1763, he moved to Copenhagen to set up a foreign trade and shipping company. He became one of Denmark's largest shipowners, with a fleet of 64 vessels at the company's height. He took advantage of Denmark's neutrality during the Napoleonic Wars to boost his and the country's trade, but his company got into difficulties during and after the English Wars, having to shut down in 1822. Personal life In 1797, he had his residence De Coninck House built in Copenhagen. During the 1780s, he acquired the Dronninggaard estate at Holte and engaged the architect Andreas Kirkerup to design a manor house at which he died during 1811. Moritz Unna
Moritz Unna (31 December 1811, Copenhagen - 2 December 1871, Copenhagen) was a Danish genre painter and photographer. Biography He was born to Salomon Emanuel Unna (1780-1819), a furniture dealer and auctioneer, and his wife, Jacobine Jacobsen. Following his father's death, his mother moved the family to Göteborg. After finishing school, he worked in a trading office as a clerk, but wanted to be a painter. He therefore returned to Copenhagen in 1830, where he was accepted as a student at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. In 1836, he was awarded a small silver medal by the Academy's model school. During his time there he also exhibited some of his works. His 1835 painting of a schoolmaster was purchased for the Royal Collection (now the National Gallery of Denmark).
