17th Special Operations Squadron
The 17th Special Operations Squadron (17 SOS) is an active unit of the United States Air Force, stationed at Will Rogers Air National Guard Base, Will Rogers Air National Guard Base, Oklahoma (WRANG). It is an active duty squadron with a classically associated Air National Guard detachment from the 137th Special Operations Wing. The squadron operates L3Harris OA-1K Sky Warden, OA-1K aircraft and is a geographically separated unit (GSU) assigned to the 492nd Special Operations Wing, Hurlburt Field, Hurlburt Field, Florida. The squadron was previously assigned to the 27th Special Operations Group, 27th Special Operations Wing, at Cannon Air Force Base, New Mexico. Gunship
A gunship is a military aircraft armed with heavy aircraft guns, primarily intended for attacking ground targets either as airstrike or as close air support. In modern usage the term "gunship" refers to fixed-wing aircraft having laterally-mounted heavy armaments (i.e. firing to the side) to attack ground or sea targets. These gunships are configured to circle the target instead of performing strafing runs. AC-119G Shadow
The Fairchild AC-119G Shadow and AC-119K Stinger were twin-engine piston-powered gunships developed by the United States during the Vietnam War. They replaced the Douglas AC-47 Spooky and operated alongside the early versions of the AC-130 Spectre gunship. Design and development By late 1967, the idea of the fixed-wing gunship had been proven so successful, the United States Air Force was having a difficult time keeping up with demand. The New Guinea campaign of the Pacific War lasted from January 1942 until the end of the war in August 1945. Cannon Air Force Base is a United States Air Force base, located approximately southwest of Clovis, New Mexico. The 27th Special Operations Wing, also known as "The Steadfast Line", is a wing of the United States Air Force stationed at Cannon Air Force Base, New Mexico.
