176th Battalion (Niagara Rangers), CEF
The 176th (Niagara Rangers) Battalion, CEF, was a unit in the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. History Based in St. Catharines, Ontario, the unit began recruiting in January 1916 in Lincoln and Welland counties. Their training ground and campsite was on Spring St., Niagara Falls, where Memorial School was built in 1921. The unit left Niagara on 24 April 1917 bound for England. Upon arrival, the battalion was absorbed into the 12th Reserve Battalion. The 176th (Niagara Rangers) Battalion, CEF, had one Officer Commanding: Lieutenant-Colonel Donald Sharpe. Canadian Expeditionary Force
The Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF; French: ''Corps expéditionnaire canadien'') was the expeditionary warfare, expeditionary field force of Canada during the First World War. It was formed on August 15, 1914, following United Kingdom declaration of war upon Germany (1914), Britain’s declaration of war on the German Empire, with an initial strength of one infantry Division (military), division. The division subsequently fought at Second Battle of Ypres, Ypres on the Western Front (World War I), Western Front, with a newly raised second division reinforcing the committed units to form the Canadian Corps. Lincoln County, Ontario
Lincoln County is a historic county in the Canadian province of Ontario. The county was formed in 1792. In 1845, the southern portion of Lincoln County was separated to form Welland County. In some census and election records from the late 19th century, the townships of Caistor and Gainsborough (which can be seen on the map below) were enumerated as part of Monck County, while Grantham and Niagara Townships were enumerated as part of Niagara County. However, neither Monck nor Niagara ever existed as incorporated municipal counties, but rather as electoral districts. In 1970, Lincoln and Welland Counties were amalgamated to form the Regional Municipality of Niagara. Welland County
Welland County (area, excluding cities was 226,970 acres) is a historic county in the Canadian province of Ontario. The county was formed in 1845 from Lincoln County. The county was named from the Welland River. The river got its name from John Graves Simcoe who named it after the River Welland which forms a border of Lincolnshire, England. Niagara Falls, and the Townships in this county were among the earliest settlements in Upper Canada. In some census and election records from the late 19th century, the townships of Pelham and Wainfleet (which can be seen on the map below) were enumerated as part of Monck County. However, Monck never existed as a county in the political sense, but only as an electoral district. The 12th Battalion, CEF was an infantry battalion of the First World War Canadian Expeditionary Force. History It was authorized on 10 August 1914 and embarked for Britain on 30 September 1914, where it was redesignated the 12th Reserve Infantry Battalion, CEF on 29 April 1915, to provide reinforcements for the Canadian Corps in the field. The battalion was reduced during the summer of 1916 and ultimately dissolved. Its residual strength was absorbed on 4 January 1917 into a new 12th Reserve Battalion, upon re-organization of the reserve units of the Canadian Infantry. Donald Sharpe
Donald Sharpe (May 13, 1875 – May 11, 1966) was a farmer and political figure in Ontario. He represented Welland in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1914 to 1919 as a Conservative member. Biography He was born in Willoughby township, the son of James Sharpe, of Scottish origin, and Sarah Wells, and was educated in Crowland township. In 1902, he married Bertha Hartley. He served on the councils for Crowland township and Thorold township and was reeve of Thorold from 1907 to 1913. Sharpe was also warden for Welland County. He was deputy grand master for the Orange Lodge. Sharpe joined the 2nd Dragoons as a private and reached the rank of major. The Lincoln Regiment
The Lincoln Regiment was an infantry regiment of the Non-Permanent Active Militia of the Canadian Militia (now the Canadian Army). In 1936, the regiment was Amalgamated with The Lincoln and Welland Regiment to form a new regiment also named The Lincoln and Welland Regiment. The Lincoln and Welland Regiment is a Primary Reserve infantry regiment of the Canadian Army based in St. Catharines, Ontario. History Perpetuated units 1794–1863 In 1794, John Butler, who had commanded Butler’s Rangers during the American Revolution was appointed Commanding Officer of three battalions of ''Nassau Militia''. Nassau (later Home District) was one of the Districts of Upper Canada, Niagara being only part of the district. By 1791 the battalions had a strength of 835 all ranks. With the reorganization of the province into sixteen counties in 1792, Lincoln County (with 20 townships) came into existence.
