14 Cephei
LZ Cephei, also known by its Flamsteed designation 14 Cephei, is a star about 3,600 light years from the Earth, in the constellation Cepheus. Its apparent magnitude is 5.6, making it faintly visible to the naked eye of an observer far from city lights. The star is a rotating ellipsoidal variable whose brightness, as measured by the ''Hipparcos'' satellite, varies between magnitude 5.52 and 5.61. LZ Cephei was discovered to be a binary star by William Edmund Harper in 1931. The orbital elements were first calculated by Robert Methven Petrie in 1962. It was discovered to be a variable star in 1972 by N. Kameswara Rao, using the Lick Observatory's 24 inch telescope. The star was given the variable star designation LZ Cephei in 1973. ''Hipparcos'' was a scientific satellite of the European Space Agency (ESA), launched in 1989 and operated until 1993. It was the first space experiment devoted to precision astrometry, the accurate measurement of the positions and distances of celestial objects on the sky. This permitted the first high-precision measurements of the intrinsic brightnesses, proper motions, and parallaxes of stars, enabling better calculations of their distance and tangential velocity. When combined with radial velocity measurements from spectroscopy, astrophysicists were able to finally measure all six quantities needed to determine the motion of stars. In astronomy, Durchmusterung or Bonner Durchmusterung (BD) is an astrometric star catalogue of the whole sky, published by the Bonn Observatory in Germany from 1859 to 1863, with an extension published in Bonn in 1886. The name comes from ('run-through examination'), a German word used for a systematic survey of objects or data. The term has sometimes been used for other astronomical surveys, including not only stars, but also the search for other celestial objects. Rotating ellipsoidal variables are a class of close binary star, binary variable star systems whose components are ellipsoidal. They are not eclipsing, but fluctuations in apparent magnitude occur due to changes in the amount of light emitting area visible to the observer. Roche Lobe
In astronomy, the Roche lobe is the region around a star in a binary system within which orbiting material is gravitationally bound to that star. It is an approximately teardrop-shaped region bounded by a critical gravitational equipotential, with the apex of the teardrop pointing towards the other star (the apex is at the Lagrangian point of the system). The Roche lobe is different from the Roche sphere, which approximates the gravitational sphere of influence of one astronomical body in the face of perturbations from a more massive body around which it orbits. It is also different from the Roche limit, which is the distance at which an object held together only by gravity begins to break up due to tidal forces. It extends the Bayer designation format, with an identifying label (as described below) preceding the Latin genitive of the name of the constellation in which the star lies. Robert Methven Petrie
Robert Methven Petrie (May 15, 1906 – April 8, 1966) was a Canadian astronomer. He was born in Scotland but emigrated to Canada at the age of five. He grew up in Victoria, British Columbia and studied physics and mathematics at the University of British Columbia. He began working summer jobs at the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory and became fascinated with astronomy. He obtained his PhD at the University of Michigan in 1932. He taught there until 1935, when he joined the staff of the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory. In 1951 he became its director. He extensively studied spectroscopic binaries.
