1-Meg Modem
The 1-Meg Modem in telecommunications was a DSL modem created by Nortel which conforms to the ADSL Lite standard. The 1-Meg Modem was the first xDSL modem to gain approval and registration under FCC Part 68 Rules. History At the time the modem was released on August 8, 1997, telephone companies were fearing competition from cable modems. However, early DSL technology was too costly for wide deployment. By October 1998 Nortel claimed more than $1 billion in sales which, in their words, had "the potential for more than one million end-user lines." The modems were originally tested at Northern Illinois University dormitories and worked well even though the school's wiring was relatively old. Bell 101 Modem
The Bell 101 Data Set was the first commercial modem for computers, released by AT&T Corporation in 1958 for use by SAGE, and made commercially available in 1959, shortly after AT&T's Bell Labs announced their 110 baud modulation frequencies. The Bell 101 allowed digital data to be transmitted over regular unconditioned telephone lines at a speed of 110 bits per second. The Bell 101 modem used audio frequency-shift keying to encode data. Different pairs of audio frequencies were used by each station: * The originating station used a mark tone of 1,270 Hz and a space tone of 1,070 Hz. * The answering station used a mark tone of 2,225 Hz and a space tone of 2,025 Hz. A line card or digital line card is a modular electronic circuit designed to fit on a separate printed circuit board (PCB) and interface with a telecommunications access network. Digital Multiplex System (DMS) is the name shared among several different telephony product lines from Nortel Networks for wireline and wireless operators.
