Ḥenana Of Adiabene
Henana of Adiabene (died 610) was a Christian theologian, and headmaster of the School of Nisibis, the main theological center of the Church of the East (571–610). Biography Before he became headmaster, Henana of Adiabene had occupied the chair of biblical exegesis. His teacher was a certain Moses, who was probably an Eastern Orthodox Christian. Many of Henana's ideas were close to Byzantine theology, and his appointment as head of the school might have been in line with a general uneasiness with pro-Antiochene theological discourse, previously set by the Synod of Beth Lapat (484). His predecessor headmaster was Abraham of Beth Rabban, who had worked hard to promote the Antiochene theology of Theodore of Mopsuestia. Henana was a humble man, worked tirelessly, and stood to his convictions. Under his leadership the school initially continued to grow. Babai The Great
Babai the Great ( , c. 551 – 628) was an early Assyrian people, Assyrian church father of the Church of the East. He set several of the foundational pillars of the Church, revived the monastic movement, and formulated its Christology in a systematic way. He served as a monastic visitor and coadjutor with Aba I, Mar Aba as unofficial heads of the Church of the East (formerly falsely referred to as "Nestorian Church") after Gregory (Nestorian patriarch), Catholicos Gregory until 628 Anno Domini, AD, leaving a legacy of strong discipline and deep religious Orthodoxy. He is revered in the modern Assyrian Church of the East and Ancient Church of the East. Nisibis (East Syriac Ecclesiastical Province)
The Metropolitanate of Nisibis was an East Syriac metropolitan province of the Church of the East, between the fifth and seventeenth centuries. Gabriel Of Shiggar
Gabriel of Sinjar (, ') was a court physician ('' drustbed'') of the Sasanian shah Khosrow II (). He played a major role in inter-Christian rivalries in the Sasanian empire. Biography Gabriel was born in Sinjar to a Syrian Miaphysite family. According to one account he became a court physician ('' drustbed'') after curing the sterility of the shah's favourite wife, Shirin, who eventually gave birth to a son named Mardanshah. Shirin later converted to the Syriac Orthodox Church under Gabriel's influence. Shirin also influenced by Gabriel, tried to replace Dyophysitism (Church of the East) with Miaphysitism as the official form of Christianity in the Iranian empire. Shirin
Shirin (; died 628) was wife of the Sasanian emperor Khosrow II (). In the revolution after the death of Khosrow's father Hormizd IV, the General Bahram Chobin took power over the Persian empire. Shirin fled with Khosrow to Syria, where they lived under the protection of Byzantine emperor Maurice. In 591, Khosrow returned to Persia to take control of the empire and Shirin was made queen. She used her new influence to support the Christian minority in Iran, but the political situation demanded that she do so discreetly. Initially, she belonged to the Church of the East but later she joined the miaphysite church of Antioch, now known as the Syriac Orthodox Church. Ishoʿyahb I of Arzun was patriarch of the Assyrian Church of the East from 582 to 595. His name is included in the traditional list of patriarchs of the Church of the East. Mar Sabrisho I
Sabrisho I (also Sabr-Ishu, Syriac for "hope in Jesus") was Patriarch of the Church of the East from 596 to 604, during the rule of King Khosrow II. Sabrisho was born in 525 in Beth Garmai (near modern-day Kirkuk) in the Sasanian Empire. He was the son of a shepherd from the mountainous region of Shahrizur. His priest sent him to the School of Nisibis. He was a hermit for many years and was a strong supporter of the monastic way of life. He was influential in integrating monasticism into the church. Origenism refers to a set of beliefs attributed to the Christian theologian Origen. The main principles of Origenism include allegorical interpretation of scripture, pre-existence, and subordinationism.
