Mardan Musayev
Mardan Mammad oglu Musayev ( Azerbaijani: ''Mərdan Məmməd oğlu Musayev''; 1 January 1907 – 25 March 1982) was an Azerbaijani Red Army senior sergeant and a Hero of the Soviet Union. Musayev was awarded the title for his actions in the Dnieper–Carpathian Offensive, in which he fought in the capture of Beryslav. He reportedly killed a German machine-gun crew during the crossing of the Dnieper and days later saved the life of his company commander during the crossing of the Inhulets. During the subsequent capture of the Shevchenko State Farm Musayev captured another machine gun, reportedly killing 20 German soldiers. For these actions he received the title Hero of the Soviet Union on 3 June 1944. Postwar, he worked in the Tovuz Rayon market. Tovuz Rayon
Tovuz District () is one of the 66 districts of Azerbaijan. It is located in the north-west of the country and belongs to the Gazakh-Tovuz Economic Region. The district borders the districts of Gadabay, Shamkir, Samukh, Agstafa, as well as the Tavush Province of Armenia and Kakheti region of Georgia. Its capital and largest city is Tovuz. As of 2020, the district had a population of 177,200. A major train line runs through the center, stopping at Tovuz Station. In July 2020, Tovuz became the main site for the clashes with Armenia. The title Hero of the Soviet Union () was the highest distinction in the Soviet Union, awarded together with the Order of Lenin personally or collectively for heroic feats in service to the Soviet state and society. The title was awarded both to civilian and military persons. Overview The award was established on 16 April 1934, by the Central Executive Committee of the Soviet Union. The first recipients of the title originally received only the Order of Lenin, the highest Soviet award, along with a certificate (грамота, ''gramota'') describing the heroic deed from the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. Because the Order of Lenin could be awarded for deeds not qualifying for the title of hero, and to distinguish heroes from other Order of Lenin holders, the Gold Star medal was introduced on 1 August 1939.
