Železník (horse)
Železník (29 April 1978 – 22 December 2004) was a Czechoslovak racehorse, the four-time winner of the Velká pardubická steeplechase. Career Železník was foaled in Šamorín, Slovakia in 1978. His dam was the Soviet mare Želatina and his sire was the G.D.R. stallion Zigeunersohn. In October 1979, Železník was sold as a yearling for 120,000 CZK to the stables of the Agrochemical Company in Slavkov u Brna. His career started out on the flat but almost ended before it took off – during his first racing season, Železník was injured in the paddock, resulting in a damaged rear knee. In 1982 he was turned over to a young rider named Josef Váňa, and in 1983 Železník started his jumping career, winning some races that very same year. Gelding
A gelding (Help:IPA/English, /ˈɡɛldɪŋ/) is a castration, castrated male horse or other equine, such as a pony, donkey or a mule. The term is also used with certain other animals and livestock, such as domesticated Camelidae, camels. By comparison, the equivalent term for castrated male cattle would be List of cattle terminology , ''steer'' (or ''bullock''), and Wether (other), ''wether'' for sheep and goats. Castration allows a male animal to be more calm, better-behaved, less sexually aggressive, and more responsive to training efforts. This makes the animal generally more suitable as an everyday working animal, or as a pet in the case of companion animals. Chestnut (coat)
Chestnut is a hair coat color of horses consisting of a reddish-to-brown coat with a mane and tail the same or lighter in color than the coat. Chestnut is characterized by the absolute absence of true black hairs. It is one of the most common horse coat colors, seen in almost every breed of horse. Chestnut is a very common coat color but the wide range of shades can cause confusion. The lightest chestnuts may be mistaken for palominos, while the darkest shades can be so dark they appear black. Chestnuts have dark brown eyes and black skin, and typically are some shade of red or reddish brown. The mane, tail, and legs may be lighter or darker than the body coat, but unlike the bay they are never truly black. Like any other color of horse, chestnuts may have pink skin with white hair where there are white markings, and if such white markings include one or both eyes, the eyes may be blue. Světlá Hora is a municipality in Bruntál District in the Moravian-Silesian Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 1,400 inhabitants. Velká Pardubická
Velká pardubická (Grand Pardubice Steeplechase) is a cross-country ( point to point) steeplechase run in Pardubice, Czech Republic since 1874. It takes place every year on the second Sunday in October. The length of the steeplechase is , with 31 obstacles. It usually takes 9–10 minutes to finish the course; the record is 8:56.01 set by Ribelino in 2015. Šamorín
Šamorín (; , ) is a small town in western Slovakia, southeast of Bratislava. Etymology The name is derived from a patron saint of a local church Sancta Maria, mentioned for the first time as ''villa Sancti Marie'' (1285). Today's name is an adaptation of the original name: ''Zent Maria – Samaria – Somoria – Šamorín''. Slavkov u Brna (; ) is a town in Vyškov District in the South Moravian Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 7,300 inhabitants. Josef Váňa
Josef Váňa (born 20 October 1952) is a Czechs, Czech Steeplechase (horse racing), steeplechase jockey, Horse breeding, horse breeder and trainer. As the eight-time winner of the Velká pardubická steeplechase, he is considered one of the greatest personalities of the horse racing sport. In 2016 he unsuccessfully ran for a seat in Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic, Czech Senate as candidate of ANO 2011. Biography Váňa was born and spent his childhood is Slopné in the Zlín Region. He began his career as a horse breeder and keeper in Tlumačov. 1987 Grand National
The 1987 Grand National (officially known as the Seagram Grand National for sponsorship reasons) was the 141st running of the Grand National horse race that took place at Aintree Racecourse near Liverpool, England, on 4 April 1987. The race was won in a time of 9 minutes, 19.3 seconds, and by a distance of five lengths by the 28/1 each way chance, Maori Venture who provided jockey Steve Knight with his second Grand National ride. The winner was trained in East Hendred, Oxfordshire by Andy Turnell and ran in the black jacket and scarlet cap of his nonagenarian owner, Jim Joel who collected a £64,000 prize.
