Šášovské Podhradie
Šášovské Podhradie () is a neighbourhood and a municipal borough of Žiar nad Hronom, located some 5 km southeast of the city center. Location Šášovské Podhradie lies in the northern valleys of Štiavnica Mountains, on the left bank of Hron, near the confluence with Istebný potok brook at an altitude of 270 meters. It also includes outposts of Bukovinka and Srnosiete. History The settlement is first mentioned in 1363 as a place of processing of oak bark for tanners from Liptov. Šášov Castle towers on the rocks above the settlement. The Castle is first mentioned in 1253 and is recorded as a royal castle since 1330. It served to protect the commercial routes near the important crossroads at Žiar nad Hronom, along the Hron. It was devastated in 1667 and deserted since the 18th century. Žiar nad Hronom (slang: Žiar, , ; until 1920 ''Svätý Kríž'' and until 1955 ''Svätý Kríž nad Hronom'') is a city in Banská Bystrica Region, Slovakia. Name development The name of the settlement has gone through multiple developments. Prior to 1237, the settlement was known as a ''place with a toll station''. In 1237, first name of the settlement emerges, as a combination of Latin and Hungarian language, Hungarian, with the town called ''Cristur'' (later ''Kerestúr''), which translates to ''The Cross of the Lord''. Back then, the settlement was split between the dominions of the Šášov castle and the Benedictine Abbey of Hronský Beňadik. Štiavnica Mountains
The Štiavnica Mountains (also Štiavnické Mountains; , ) are a volcanic mountain range southern central Slovakia. They are part of Inner Western Carpathians and the Slovenské stredohorie Mountains. The area is protected by Štiavnica Mountains Protected Landscape Area. They are bordered by the Kremnica Mountains (''Kremnické vrchy'') in the north, Pliešovce and Krupina basins (''Krupinská kotlina'') in the east, Danubian Hills (''Podunajská pahorkatina'') in the south and Pohronský Inovec, Vtáčnik and Žiar Basin (''Žiarska kotlina'') in the west. A borough is an administrative division in various English-speaking countries. In principle, the term ''borough'' designates a self-governing walled town, although in practice, official use of the term varies widely. History In the Middle Ages, boroughs were settlements in England that were granted some self-government; burghs were the Scottish equivalent. In medieval England, boroughs were also entitled to elect members of parliament. The use of the word ''borough'' probably derives from the burghal system of Alfred the Great.
