Quail Island (Victoria)
Quail Island is the third-largest island in Australia's Western Port, after Phillip Island and French Island. The island was listed on the Register of the National Estate, and its wetlands are listed on the Ramsar Convention. Overview Quail Island is about in area, though earlier news reports claimed that it was much larger, up to . Quail Island is connected to the mainland at low tide. North of the island, a tidal creek connects Watson Inlet and Rutherford Inlet. The island itself is uninhabited, the entirety of it being gazetted as Quail Island Nature Conservation Reserve, and in January 2016 as the North Western Port Nature Conservation Reserve. Mangrove surrounds the island, and on its western shore there is a wide salt marsh. There is an undisturbed topography area of Cranbourne sands, and behind the mangroves there are sandy spits and beaches. Palmyra Atoll
Palmyra Atoll (), also referred to as Palmyra Island, is one of the Line Islands, Northern Line Islands (southeast of Kingman Reef and north of Kiribati). It is located almost due south of the Hawaiian Islands, roughly one-third of the way between Hawaii and American Samoa. North America is about northeast and New Zealand the same distance southwest, placing the atoll at the approximate center of the Pacific Ocean. The land area is , with about 9 miles (14 km) of sea-facing coastline and reef. There is one boat anchorage (maritime), anchorage, known as West Lagoon, accessible from the sea by a narrow artificial channel and an old airstrip; during WW2, it was turned into a Naval Air Station for several years and used for training and refueling. Quail Island (Northern Territory)
Quail Island is an island in the Northern Territory of Australia in the Beagle Gulf about from the territory capital of Darwin. Quail Island belongs to the Quail Island Group. The other two islands in the archipelago are Bare Sand Island (southwest of Quail Island) and Djadjalbit Island (south). The islands are known for being a breeding ground for flatback turtles. History On 9 October 1881 when ''SS Brisbane'', an 85.8 metres long passenger, cargo and mail ship, built by A & J Inglis, Pointhouse, Glasgow, struck the nearby ''Fish Reef'', while heading there with cargo from Hong Kong. Quail Island, Cape Verde
Quail is a collective name for several genera of mid-sized birds generally placed in the order Galliformes. The collective noun for a group of quail is a flock, covey, or bevy. Old World quail are placed in the family Phasianidae, and New World quail are placed in the family Odontophoridae. The species of buttonquail are named for their superficial resemblance to quail, and form the family Turnicidae in the order Charadriiformes. The king quail, an Old World quail, often is sold in the pet trade, and within this trade is commonly, though mistakenly, referred to as a "button quail". Many of the common larger species are farm-raised for table food or egg consumption, and are hunted on game farms or in the wild, where they may be released to supplement the wild population, or extend into areas outside their natural range.
