Đurđevac is a town in the Koprivnica-Križevci County in Croatia. History Until 1918, Đurđevac (named ''Militär Sanct Georgen'' before 1850) was part of the Austrian monarchy (Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia after the compromise of 1867), in the Croatian Military Frontier, under the WARASDIN-ST. GEORGENER Regiment N°VI. In the late 19th century and early 20th century, Đurđevac was a district capital in the Bjelovar-Križevci County of the Kingdom. Boris Braun
Boris Braun (20 August 1920 – 7 October 2018) was a Croatian University professor, Holocaust survivor, and member of the Jewish community in Zagreb. Early life Braun was born to Šandor and Elizabeta (née Mautner) Braun, members of a notable and wealthy Jewish family of Đurđevac. He had a sister called Štefica. The Braun family were reputable and respected in Đurđevac, where they owned the sawmill, vineyard, mill and ice factory. His father brought electricity to the Đurđevac region and maintained the local substation. Braun's father was a close friend of Ivan Šubašić and Mate Starčević, mayor of Zagreb, both of whom participated in the hunting events organized every year at the Braun estate. Before World War II he studied agriculture at the University of Zagreb. The Sands of Đurđevac () is an area of partially stabilized sand dunes in the eastern part of the City of Đurđevac, Croatia. The region is sometimes called the Croatian Sahara, and Bloody Sands (''Krvavi peski''). This is a protected botanical area, distinctive habitats with a large number of endemic species, unique flora and fauna, and visible forms of sand dunes, and the remains of the "Croatian Sahara". Picokijada ( Croatian: ) is a traditional cultural-tourist manifestation that has been held since 1968 at the end of June in the town of Đurđevac in northern Croatia. The event festivities last three days, with the main event being the ''Legenda o picokima'' ("Legend of the Rooster"), a remembrance of the defense of the town Đurđevac from the Ottoman Turks. The ''Legenda o picokima'' is set in the time of the attack of the Ottoman forces on the Old town Đurđevac. After the army of Ulama-beg encountered unexpected resistance and failed to take Đurđevac fortress, he decided to enact a long siege, with the goal of starving the army people that hid inside.
