ÄŒSD Class S 499.0
The ČSD Class S 499.0 and S 499.1 are essentially ČSD Class S 489.0 locomotives with revised gearing for higher speeds and added electrodynamic braking system. They operate from the 25 kV 50 Hz overhead line electrification system in both the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Their design can be traced back to the S699.0 locomotives produced by Škoda in 1962. S 499.0 had a maximum speed of , with S 499.1 . ČD's cargo division (ČDC) operate the locomotives in the Czech Republic. In Slovakia the fleet is shared almost equally between ZSSK's passenger division and ZSCS, their cargo operations. Numbering Locomotives 240 001-8 to 240 120-6 are the original build S 499.0. 240 121-4 to 240 145-3 were converted from S 499.1 by CSD at ŽOS Vrútky, who down-graded the maximum speed to . The Škoda Works (, ) was one of the largest European industrial conglomerates of the 20th century. In 1859, Czech engineer Emil Škoda bought a foundry and machine factory in Plzeň, Bohemia, Austria-Hungary that had been established ten years previously, founding Škoda Works. ÄŒD Class 340
The ÄŒD Class 340 is a multisystem electric locomotive, designed for use between the Czech Republic and Austria. A total of three locomotives were rebuilt from the earlier ÄŒSD Class S 499.0, 240 class. Since 2007, all three have been allocated to ÄŒD Cargo. History When the railway from Horní DvoÅ™iÅ¡tÄ›, in the Czech Republic to Summerau, in Austria, was electfied, this left ÄŒeské dráhy, ÄŒD with a problem. They owned no locomotives that could operate on both the Czech 25 kV AC railway electrification, 25 kV 50 Hz electrification, and the 15 kV AC railway electrification, Austrian 15 kV 16.7 Hz electrification. This left ÄŒD having to use ÄŒD Class 771, ÄŒD 771 class diesel locomotives on these trains.
