Ürümqi Television Station
Urumqi Television Station (UTV) () is a state-owned television station in Ürümqi, Xinjiang, China. It was established in April, 1985 as a cable network and started broadcasting on September 28 in the same year. July 2009 Ürümqi Riots
A series of violent riots over several days broke out on 5 July 2009 in Ürümqi, the capital city of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, in northwestern China. The first day's rioting, which involved at least 1,000 Uyghurs, began as a protest, but escalated into violent attacks that mainly targeted Han people. According to Chinese state media, a total of 197 people died, most of whom were Han people or non-Muslim minorities, with 1,721 others injured and many vehicles and buildings destroyed. Many Uyghurs disappeared during wide-scale police sweeps in the days following the riots; Human Rights Watch (HRW) documented 43 cases and said figures for real disappearances were likely to be much higher. Rioting began following the Shaoguan incident, where false accusations of rape of a Han woman by Uyghur men led to a brawl between ethnic Han and Uyghur factory workers in Shaoguan, resulting in the deaths of two Uyghurs who were both from Xinjiang. Xinjiang Television Station
Xinjiang Television (XJTV) ( zh, s=新疆电视台, t=新疆電視台, p=Xīnjiāng Diànshìtái; ; , ) is a local television network station in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China. It is the major television station in Xinjiang and is located in the capital Ürümqi. It was founded and started to broadcast on October 1, 1970. XJTV currently broadcasts in Mandarin, Uyghur, Kazakh, Kyrgyz and Mongolian languages. In May 2019, Xinjiang Television signed a strategic cooperation and technical assistance agreement with Huawei. Li Zhi (politician)
Li Zhi (; born November 1950) is a former Chinese politician who spent his career in Xinjiang, most notable for his role as the Communist party chief of Ürümqi during the city's rioting in July 2009. He was originally from Lixin, Anhui. He was detained by the authorities for investigation in 2015 and then expelled from the Chinese Communist Party. Life and career According to his official biography, Li joined the People's Liberation Army in 1969, joined the Chinese Communist Party in March 1971, and has a post-graduate degree. After retiring from military service, Li worked in Nilka County in Xinjiang as a labourer in the grains department. He then went on to serve in the Region's Light Manufacturing Bureau. September 2009 Xinjiang Unrest
In September 2009, Ürümqi, the capital of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in the People's Republic of China, experienced a period of unrest in the aftermath of the July 2009 Ürümqi riots. Late August and early September saw a series of syringe attacks on civilians. In response to the attacks, thousands of residents held protests for several days, resulting in the deaths of five people. In addition, the arrest and beating of several Hong Kong journalists during the protests attracted international attention. Hong Shan
Coordinates: Hong Shan, Hongshan or the Red Mountain (; Pinyin: Hóng Shān; ; ''Qiziltagh'') is an inner city mountain in Ürümqi, capital of Xinjiang, China. The mountain, sometimes referred to as a hill for its smaller size than a mountain in land form, is the symbolic scenic spot of Ürümqi. The local Ürümqi Television Station adopted the shape of Hong Shan in red as its logo. Etymology As the rocks of the mountain reflect a bright red color, people call it Hong Shan ("Red Mountain" in Chinese).
