Ãœlo Torpats
Ülo Torpats (15 November 1920, in Tartu – 20 January 1988, in Tartu) was an Estonian philologist and translator. Torpats graduated from Hugo Treffner Gymnasium in 1940. In 1951, he graduated from Tartu State University with a degree in classical philology Classics, also classical studies or Ancient Greek and Roman studies, is the study of classical antiquity. In the Western world, ''classics'' traditionally refers to the study of Ancient Greek and Roman literature and their original languages, .... From 1951 to 1953, he worked at the Estonian Academy of Agriculture. Tartu
Tartu is the second largest city in Estonia after Tallinn. Tartu has a population of 97,759 (as of 2024). It is southeast of Tallinn and 245 kilometres (152 miles) northeast of Riga, Latvia. Hugo Treffner Gymnasium
Hugo Treffner Gymnasium (; abbreviated as HTG) is a secondary school in Tartu, Estonia with special emphasis on science education. Founded by Hugo Treffner, it was the only large secondary school in 19th-century Estonia with predominantly Estonians, Estonian students and no age restrictions. During the Estonian national awakening, it greatly contributed to the numbers of Estonian intellectuals. History Hugo Treffner Gymnasium was founded by Baltic German Hugo Hermann Fürchtegott Treffner on 7 December 1883. The Treffner family originated from Austria, connected to the royal family in the 1600s. During the Thirty Years' War the family fled to Estonia.
