Úrvalsdeild Karla Player Of The Year
The Úrvalsdeild Karla Player of the Year is an award for the Icelandic basketball league system, top-tier basketball league in Iceland, the Úrvalsdeild karla (basketball), men's Úrvalsdeild. It was first awarded in 1968, to Birgir Örn Birgis, and the first trophy was given by Dave Zinkoff of the Philadelphia 76ers. From 1979, the award has been given to both the domestic and foreign player of the year. Icelandic Basketball League System
The Icelandic basketball league system, or Icelandic basketball league pyramid, is a series of League system, interconnected competitions for basketball clubs in Iceland. The system has a hierarchical format with a promotion and relegation, promotion and demotion system between competitions at different levels. Men There are currently four different competitions on the pyramid - the 1st tier Premier League (Iceland), Úrvalsdeild, the 2nd tier First Division Men (Icelandic basketball), Division I, the 3rd tier Division II, and the 4th tier Division III. Birgir Jakobsson
Birgir Jakobsson (born 21 March 1948) is an Icelandic doctor and former basketball player. Following a 20-year stay as a doctor and later director at the Karolinska University Hospital, he was the Director of Health of Iceland from 2015 to 2018. Birgir played basketball for several years, playing the majority of his basketball career with Íþróttafélag Reykjavíkur where he won seven national championships and was named the Úrvalsdeild Player of the Year in 1972. Outside of club basketball, he was a member of the Icelandic national basketball team from 1966 to 1976. Early life Birgir was born in Reykjavík to Jakob Tryggvason and Ragnheiður Jónsdóttir. Tim Dwyer (basketball)
Tim Dwyer is an American former basketball player and coach. During his career, he starred in Iceland where he was a three-time Úrvalsdeild Foreign Player of the Year and led Valur to both the national championship and the Icelandic Cup in 1980 and 1983. College career Dwyer played for Monte Vista High School in Whittier, California, then junior college basketball for Rio Hondo College, where he averaged 19 points and 10 rebounds per game in his sophomore season. He then played Division I college basketball for the Cal State Fullerton Titans men's basketball team from 1974 to 1976. In 49 games, he averaged 11.0 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. KR Men's Basketball
The KR men's basketball team, commonly known as KR or KR Basket, is a professional basketball club based in Reykjavík, Iceland. It is the men's basketball department of Knattspyrnufélag Reykjavíkur (English: Reykjavík Football Club) multi-sport club. It has won the Icelandic championship eighteen times, the most national championships in the men's top-tier league history. It won a record 6 national championships in a row from 2014 to 2019. The 1978–79 Úrvalsdeild karla was the 28th season of the Úrvalsdeild karla, the top tier men's basketball league on Iceland. The season started on 14 October 1978 and ended on 29 March 1979. KR won its 7th title by posting the best record in the league. It secured the title by beating Valur, 77–75, in the last game of the season. Competition format The participating teams first played a conventional round-robin schedule with every team playing each opponent twice "home" and twice "away" for a total of 20 games. Rick Hockenos
Richard Hockenos is an American former basketball player and coach. After being drafted by the Chicago Bulls in the 1974 NBA draft he went on to play professionally in Europe. Early life Hockenos attended Bishop Duffy High School in Niagara Falls, New York. Between his sophomore and junior years he had a hip operation as he was growing to fast and the bones in his hip separated. After mediocre senior season, he was not recruited by any colleges and rejected by the schools he applied to due to academic reasons. He finally enrolled at Niagara Community College in 1969. After having a successful second season with NCCC basketball team, he decided to spend his last two seasons with Gannon College. Kristinn Jörundsson (born 13 October 1950) is an Icelandic former basketball and football player who played for both the Icelandic national basketball team and the Icelandic national football team. He won seven national basketball championships as a member of Íþróttafélag Reykjavíkur and one national football championships as a member of Knattspyrnufélagið Fram. Valur Men's Basketball
The Valur men's basketball team, commonly known as Valur, is a basketball team based in Reykjavík, Iceland. It is part of the Valur (club), Valur multi-sport club. History The club was founded as ''Gosi'' on 25 December 1951 and was one of the founding members of the Úrvalsdeild karla (basketball), Icelandic men's top division. On 22 December 1957 the club changed its name to ''Körfuknattleiksfélag Reykjavíkur'' (English: Reykjavík Basketball Club) and played under that name until 1970.
