Icelandic Basketball League System
The Icelandic basketball league system, or Icelandic basketball league pyramid, is a series of League system, interconnected competitions for basketball clubs in Iceland. The system has a hierarchical format with a promotion and relegation, promotion and demotion system between competitions at different levels. Men There are currently four different competitions on the pyramid - the 1st tier Premier League (Iceland), Úrvalsdeild, the 2nd tier First Division Men (Icelandic basketball), Division I, the 3rd tier Division II, and the 4th tier Division III. The leagues are organized by the Icelandic Basketball Association. Haukar Women's Basketball
The Haukar women's basketball team, commonly known as Haukar (), is the women's basketball department of Knattspyrnufélagið Haukar multi-sport club, based in the town of Hafnarfjörður, Iceland. Recent history On 23 September 2021, Haukar became the first Icelandic women's basketball team to win in a continental competition when it defeated Clube União Sportiva, 81–76, in the first leg of the 2021–22 EuroCup Women qualifiers. In the game, Jana Falsdóttir became the youngest Icelandic female player to play and score in a continental competition, breaking the records of Unnur Tara Jónsdóttir and Ragna Margrét Brynjarsdóttir. On 30 September, Haukar lost the second leg 79–81, after starting the game 2–21, but advanced to the regular season with a combined 160–157 victory. Ágúst Björgvinsson
Ágúst Sigurður Björgvinsson (born 16 January 1979) is an Icelandic professional basketball coach who last coached Úrvalsdeild karla club Valur. He was the head coach of the Icelandic women's national basketball team from 2007 to 2009 and won back-to-back national championships with Haukar women's team in 2006 and 2007. Coaching career Ágúst was the head coach of Haukar women's team from 2004 to 2007. In 2005, he helped the club to its first major title in thirteen years, winning the Icelandic Women's Cup. In 2006, he guided Haukar to the national championship and in the 2006–2007 season the club won all five major titles; the national championship, the Icelandic Cup, the Super Cup, the Company Cup and the Divisional Crown for posting the best record in the league. Gréta María Grétarsdóttir
Gréta María Grétarsdóttir (born 13 August 1980) is an Icelandic businesswoman and former basketball player and coach. During her basketball career, she had her most success with KR, winning two national championships and two Icelandic Cups. During her peak, she was a member of the Icelandic national basketball team. Early life Gréta grew up in Flateyri before moving with her family to Reykjavík. Basketball career Gréta started her senior team career with ÍR during the 1993–94 season. After the season she was named the Young Player of the Year. She later moved to KR where she won the national championship and the Icelandic Cup in 2001 and 2002. Einar Árni Jóhannsson
Einar Árni Jóhannsson (born 8 January 1977) is an Icelandic basketball coach. He won the Icelandic men's championship in 1998 with Njarðvík as an assistant to Friðrik Ingi Rúnarsson, and in 2006 as Njarðvík's head coach. He won the Icelandic Men's Basketball Cup in 2005 with Njarðvík and was named the Úrvalsdeild karla Coach of the Year in 2007. Keflavík (pronounced , meaning ''Driftwood Bay'') is a town in the Southern Peninsula (Iceland), Reykjanes region in southwest Iceland. Anna María Sveinsdóttir
Anna María Sveinsdóttir (born 22 November 1969) is an Icelandic former basketball player and coach. She won twelve Icelandic championships and eleven Icelandic basketball cups, and is regarded as one of the best women's players in Icelandic basketball history. She was the first player to break the 5000 points barrier in Úrvalsdeild kvenna and finished her career as its all-time leading scorer with 5001 points in 324 games. The scoring record stood until 23 April 2013, when it was broken by Birna Valgarðsdóttir. In 2001 she was voted the Icelandic female basketball player of the century and as one of the twelve players on the team of the 20th century.
