Øystese is a village in the municipality of Kvam in Vestland county, Norway. It is located along the Hardangerfjord about east of the municipal centre of Norheimsund. Norwegian County Road 7 passes through the village. The village had a population (2012) of 1,881; giving the village a population density of . It is now considered part of the Norheimsund urban area, so separate village statistics are no longer tracked. The village is an industry centre for the municipality. It is a leading producer of lumber and there are also several furniture factories. The furniture design and manufacturing company Arthur Soltvedt Møbelfabrikk, also known as Pega Furniture, was first founded in Øystese in 1942. There is a dairy and cheese factory in Øystese. Norheimsund
Norheimsund is the administrative centre of the municipality of Kvam in Vestland county, Norway. The village is located on the northern side of the Hardangerfjord, about from the city of Bergen. The village of Øystese lies about to the northeast and the village of Vikøy lies about southeast of Norheimsund. The village of Steine is a suburb, immediately to the west of Norheimsund. Øystese Church () is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Kvam Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It is located in the village of Øystese. It is the church for the Øystese parish which is part of the Hardanger og Voss prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Bjørgvin. The white, wooden church was built in a long church design in 1868 using plans drawn up by the architect C. Erichsen in consultation with Jacob Wilhelm Nordan. The church seats about 500 people. Gammalost
Gamalost (Nynorsk; ''gammelost'' or ''gammalost'' in Bokmål) is a traditional Norwegian cheese. History Gamalost, which translates as ''old cheese'', was once a staple of the Norwegian diet. Like many traditional Norwegian foods, such as flat bread, dry salted meats and stockfish, Gamalost could be stored for long periods without refrigeration. The brownish-yellow cheese is firm, moist, coarse and often granular. Gamalost is rich in protein with low fat content, measuring 1% fat and 50% protein. Arthur Soltvedt Møbelfabrikk, also known as Pega Furniture, was a Norwegian family business established in 1942. It was one of the first Norwegian furniture manufacturers with a focus on serial production and one of the major participators in Norwegian furniture exports during the 1950s and 1960s. Production was discontinued in 2011. History First established in Øystese during the Second World War, the business relocated to the village of Florvåg on the island Askøy, just north of Bergen, in 1948. The business originally manufactured simple bedroom furniture, like small beds, but during cooperation with Danish designer Ib Juul Christiansen in 1952 the Pega furniture system was developed. Norwegian County Road 7
County Road 7 () is a road in Vestland county, Norway. The road runs from Trengereid in the municipality of Bergen to Kollanes in the municipality of Voss. The route branches off from European route E16 and passes through the Trengereid Valley to Samnanger before crossing mountainous territory east to Norheimsund. It then continues along the north side of the Hardanger Fjord through Øystese and Ålvik and the north side of the Granvin Fjord before meeting Norwegian National Road 13 in the municipality of Voss. History The section of the road through the Toka Gorge was laid out around 1890; construction began on it in 1903 and it was opened in 1907. Large parts of the road were carved out by hand while the workers hung on ropes against the sheer mountainside. This method was used because the road lacks any natural foundation. Hardangerfjord
The Hardangerfjord () is the fifth longest fjord in the world, and the second longest fjord in Norway. It is located in Vestland county in the Hardanger region. The fjord stretches from the Atlantic Ocean into the mountainous interior of Norway along the Hardangervidda plateau. The innermost point of the fjord reaches the town of Odda. Location The Hardangerfjord starts at the Atlantic Ocean about south of the city of Bergen. Here the fjord heads in a northeasterly direction between the island of Bømlo and the mainland.
