Østermarie
Østermarie is a village on the Danish island of Bornholm, west of Svaneke. The population as of 1 January 2022 is 461. History Although St Mary's Church (''Sct. Maria Kirke'') was built in the second half of the 12th century, today's village has its origins around 1880 when the first dwellings were built. As the village became more prosperous, a new church was built in 1891. A house named Godthåb (1883) served as the local post office. Godthåb, used on the post-office stamp, was the first official name of the locality. Østermarie Church
Østermarie Church, in the village of Østermarie near Svaneke on the Danish island of Bornholm, was originally built in the early 13th century. While it was being demolished in 1890, it was discovered it was of considerable architectural interest and work was stopped. The new church from 1891 is also in the Romanesque style. The old church In 1885, the tower of the old Romanesque church was in danger of collapsing and had to be demolished. Soon afterwards, it was decided that the entire church should be demolished but when it was found that the building was of considerable architectural interest the work was stopped in 1890. At that time, the south wall and the apse were still intact. It was discovered that the nave contained two barrel vaults as a ceiling and two pillars at the centre of the church. Bornholm
Bornholm () is a Danish island in the Baltic Sea, to the east of the rest of Denmark, south of Sweden, northeast of Germany and north of Poland. Strategically located, Bornholm has been fought over for centuries. It has usually been ruled by Denmark, but also by Sweden and by Lübeck. The ruin of Hammershus, at the northwestern tip of the island, is the largest medieval fortress in northern Europe, testament to the importance of its location. Rolf Graae
Rolf Saenger Graae (29 September 1916, Copenhagen – 16 September 1996, Hellerup) was a Danish architect who is remembered for the churches and religious works he completed or restored in the style of the Klint school. He is also considered to be Denmark's most important 20th century organ designer. Early life The son of a successful bank employee, Graae first studied the history of art at Copenhagen University (1934–38) before attending the architecture school at the Danish Academy where he graduated in 1943. Paul Høm
Paul Briegel Høm (2 May 1905, Ballerup – 25 September 1994, Gudhjem) was a Danish artist who is remembered for his religious paintings and brightly coloured stained glass windows which decorate a number of Danish churches. Biography Høm studied at the Danish Academy from 1924 to 1929 under Aksel Jorgensen and Sigurd Wandel. His painting, primarily inspired by Jørgensen, was mainly of members of his family, especially his wife and children whom he depicted in strong bright colours. In 1943, he moved to Gudhjem on the island of Bornholm where his work benefitted from the bright light and his friendship with Helge Nielsen. He decorated a number of churches with altarpieces, frescos and mosaics, especially on Bornholm, often working with the architect Rolf Graae. His work can also be found in Kvong Church near Varde, Bräkne-Hoby in Blekinge (1957–59) and Christian's Church in Lyngby. Several of his works were completed together with whom he married in 1947. Svaneke
Svaneke (''Swencke'' in 1410, from old Danish ''swan'' swan and ''*wīka'' inlet) is a small town on the eastern coast of the Baltic island of Bornholm, Denmark. It lies mainly in Svaneke parish and partly in Ibsker parish. It is Denmark's easternmost and until few years ago the smallest and now the second smallest (only Ærøskøbing is smaller) chartered town with a population of 1,079 as of 1 January 2022. Vestermarie
Vestermarie is a village midway between Rønne and Aakirkeby on the Danish island of Bornholm. As of 2022, it has a population of 240. History The village takes its name from the original Vestermarie Church which was dedicated to the Virgin Mary in 1335. The prefix "vester" (west) distinguishes it from Østermarie, "øster" meaning "east". Today's church was completed in 1835 in the Neo-Romanesque style. The churchyard contains a number of runestones. The village today The village is essentially a residential area for those working in Rønne, only away. Since the 1950s, it has grown gradually to the west and northwest of the church. There is a school (1964) and a food store but no other businesses. The community hall (''forsamlingshuset'') is of interest to the local heritage. Prehistoric sites An impressive group of menhirs stands on Bjergebakken (102 m) some 2 km north of the village. Andreas Clemmensen
Andreas Clemmensen (7 August 1852 – 5 December 1928) was a Danish architect and royal building inspector. Early life and education Clemmensen was born on 7 August 1852 in Leck, Duchy of Schleswig, the son of Carl Frederik Clemmensen and Charlotte Laurence Hass. He trained at C.V. Nielsens Tegneskole and was admitted to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1867, from which he left as an architect in 1875. During his studies he was a draftsman for Johan Daniel Herholdt and Hans J. Holm. He conducted travel studies in Italy, France, England and the Netherlands in the years 1880-83 and again in Italy 1901, 1906, 1921 and 1923. He was in Sweden in 1921. Career Clemmensen was chairman of the Academic Association of Architects (''Academic Arkitektforening'') 1904–07, royal building inspector 1904–1911.
