Peter Østbye
Peter Nielsen Østbye (20 February 1855 - Norway—2 February 1943) was a Norwegian philologist and academic administrator. He taught classical languages and was a proponent of learning the Latin language. He was an education official at Fredrikstad between 1894-1910 and at Drammen between 1910-1926. He is principally known for his translations of Homer's epic poems, the ''Iliad'' and the ''Odyssey'' from Ancient Greek into Norwegian. Biography Østbye was born into a farming family at Nittedal in Akershus, Norway. He was the son of Nils Østbye (1814–1901) and Marie Petersen (1818–71). During his childhood, he moved to Skien, where he studied at the Latin school. In 1873, he graduated and obtained an ''Examen artium'' with Latin honor ''laudabilis præ cæteris''. He first studied at the Polytechnic University in Dresden, but he resigned and chose to study classical philology at the University of Kristiania (now University of Oslo) where he graduated in 1881. Adolf Østbye
Adolf Østbye (February 1868 – September 5, 1907) was a Norwegian revue artist and barber who became the first person to make a recording in Norway. The earliest playable Norwegian phonograph cylinder dates from 1889. During the years 1889–1904, Østbye made a series of cylinders, announced "Østbye Record". Several of these are made with cooperation with the Norwegian Pathé manager, William Farre. The first recording in Norway In December 1904, Østbye became the first to make a gramophone record in Norway. The record was "Parodi paa Terje Vigen". Edvard Grieg (1843–1907), had made nine records in Paris during the spring of 1903. Østbye's Norwegian recording sessions were held at the Grand Hotel, Kristiania. Østbye recorded several cylinders and gramophone records. Rolf Østbye
Rolf Østbye (17 April 1898 – 20 November 1979) was a Norwegian businessperson. He was born in Kristiania as a son of rector Niels Johan Hagerup Østbye (1866–1952) and Johanne Elisabeth Mellbye (1873–1962). From 1923 to 1931 he was married to Reidun Berg (1899–1976), and from 1933 he was married to Ellen Martinsen (1904–1997), a granddaughter of Gustav Martinsen. He worked in Ringnes Bryggeri, Lillehammer Bryggeri and Bjølsen Valsemølle at a young age, but took education as a chemical engineer. He was hired in Standard Telefon og Kabelfabrik in 1947, and became chief executive officer in 1949. In 1953 he was hired in Norsk Hydro, becoming Director-General (CEO) in 1956. He stayed in this position until 1966; after this he was chairman of the board from 1967 to 1970. Gudbrand Østbye
Gudbrand Østbye (2 October 1885 – 2 June 1972) was a Norwegian army officer and historian. He was born in Gjøvik, a son of factory owner Anders Østbye and Ellen Anna Hovdenak. He was married to Ragna Heyerdahl Hørbye, and thus son-in-law of Ragna Hørbye. During the Norwegian Campaign in 1940, he was in command of the 4th Brigade. Among his publications are ''Krigen i Valdres'' from 1946, and two volumes of the series ''Krigen i Norge 1940''.
