The building is a former market hall, part of the Kødbyen, Brown Meat District. History The Kødbyen, Cattle Market opened on 28 November 1879. Øksnehallen was built in 1891 to a design by city architect Ludvig Fenger. It housed dealers' offices and had a capacity for 1600 head of cattle. The market hall remained in use until the White Meat Market was inaugurated in the 1959s. Øksnehallen was converted into an exhibition space in connection with Copenhagen's status as European Capital of Culture in 1996. It has been operated by DGI-byen since September 2005. Current use Øksnehallen is used for a wide array of events, including art exhibitions, flea markets, conferences and fashion shows. It houses the VISION event during Copenhagen Fashion Week. Copenhagen Fashion Week is an international fashion event in Copenhagen, Denmark. This biannual event is organized by the Danish Fashion Institute. History The first Copenhagen Fashion Week was held in 2006, following the merger of the Danish clothing trade fairs, Dansk Modeuge and Dansk Herremodeuge, which dated back to the 1950s. Organization Each season, Copenhagen Fashion Week hosts four days of shows, presentations, and events as well as the two trade shows, CIFF and Revolver. Copenhagen Fashion Week is a non-profit organization run on 15% public funding and 85% commercial partnerships, with the Danish Ministry of Industry, Business and Financial Affairs being the main contributor. Halmtorvet ( English: The Haymarket) is a public square in the Vesterbro district of Copenhagen, Denmark. It is located next to Copenhagen Central Station in front of the Meat District. The oblong square eventually turns into Sønder Boulevard, a broad street with a park strip in its central reserve, which continues to Enghavevej at Enghave station. History Copenhagen's haymarket was originally located just inside the Western City Gate where the City Hall Square lies today. It closed on 1 January 1888 and relocated to the area outside the new Livestock Market which had opened at the site in 1879. Market days were Wednesday and Saturday and up to several hundred loads of hay and straw were traded and distributed to cattle and horse stables around the city. Up through the 20th century, with improved infrastructure, livestock moved out of the city and horses lost their role in transportation, and the haymarket finally closed. DGI-byen
DGI-byen is a facility that houses various spa facilities, restaurants, hotels, conference facilities, a bowling alley, flexible multi-centres, sports clubs, a superellipse shaped swimming pool and Vandkulturhuset, (Danish for "Water Culture House"), located in central Copenhagen, Denmark. DGI-byen is situated within the Meat District (Kødbyen), a historical industrial area that was transformed into a recreation area for cultural and leisure activities from 1993. However, most of DGI-byen consists of new buildings, in contrast to the rest of the Meat District. One exception is Øksnehallen, formerly a stable for 1,600 cattle, now an exhibition and events venue. First parts of the complex were opened in 1999. It is named after Danske Gymnastik- og Idrætsforeninger ("Danish Gymnastics and Sports Associations"), the main umbrella organisation of 5,000 local sports associations in Denmark with 1,3 million members. Ludvig Fenger
Ludvig Peter Fenger (7 July 1833 – 9 March 1905) was a Danish architect. He was a proponent of the Historicist style, and from 1886 to 1904 he held the title of City Architect in Copenhagen. Among his works are several churches, the Central Fire Station and Vestre Prison in Copenhagen. He also directed the renovations of Church of Holmen and Christian IV's Stock Exchange. Early life and education Ludvig Fenger was born on 7 July 1833 in the village of Slots Bjergby outside Slagelse as the son of the local pastor. After graduating from Slagelse Latin School he attended the Royal Danish Academy while also working for architects such as Michael Gottlieb Bindesbøll, Christian Hansen and Ferdinand Meldahl. He received the Academy's Large Gold Medal in 1866 and went on several journeys abroad from 1867 to 1869.
