Östanå Castle
Östanå Castle () is a castle in Sweden. It is located in the Österåker Municipality of Stockholm County, and is situated some north-east of Stockholm City. The castle overlooks the main shipping channel into Stockholm through the Stockholm archipelago, and the ferry port of Östanå, from which ferries cross to the island of Ljusterö, lies just to the west of the castle. Between the 14th and 17th centuries, various families from the Swedish nobility owned the castle. The original wooden building was destroyed in 1719, during the Russian Pillage, and the current main building was built between 1791 and 1794. At the end of the 19th century the castle was home to Erik Gustaf Boström, the then prime minister of Sweden. The Boström family sold the castle in 2006, and by 2016 it was in a poor state of repair, and up for sale for 35 million kronor. Österåker Municipality
Österåker Municipality (, ) is a municipality in Stockholm County in east central Sweden. Its seat is located in the town of Åkersberga, with a population of 26,727 (2005). From 1974 to 1982 Österåker was part of Vaxholm Municipality. Its location by the Stockholm archipelago, in the Roslagen area, attracts both people who settles here, often commuting to Stockholm, and visiting tourists. Österåker boasts several golf courses, many possibilities for canoeing, horse riding, fishing and other nature activities. Österåker also has a historical significance, with at least three notable castles from the 17th and 18th centuries, with histories tracing even further back. Sweden's once largest quartz mine, the Härsbacka mine, lays within the municipality. Stockholm Archipelago
The Stockholm Archipelago () is the largest archipelago in Sweden, and the second-largest archipelago in the Baltic Sea (the largest being the Archipelago Sea across the Baltic in Finland). Part of the archipelago has been designated as a Ramsar site since 1989. Stockholm Archipelago has been found to have slightly over 24,000 islands, islets and skerries and covers approximately 1,700 km² of which approximately 530 km² is land. There are around 10,000 permanent residences and 50,000 holiday homes in the archipelago. Ljusterö
Ljusterö is an island in Sweden. It is in the northern part of the Stockholm archipelago in Österåker Municipality, Stockholm County. It is approximately 65 kilometers north of central Stockholm. With an area of 62.05 km2, it is the 17th largest island in the country. The island is accessed from the mainland by regular ferries from Östanå as well as by boat from central Stockholm. It has approximately 1,500 permanent residents and 25,000-30,000 residents during the summer season due to the large number of summer houses. Administrative history Ljusterö was originally its own municipality until 1967, when it became part of Österåker Municipality.
