Ömerli, Mardin
Ömerli (; ; ) is a municipality and district of Mardin Province, Turkey. Its area is 458 km2, and its population is 13,740 (2022). The town is mostly populated by Kurds of the Bilikan tribe and Mhallamis. Other groups in the town include Kurds from other tribes, Arabs, few Syriacs and Georgians, and civil servants of Turkish roots. It is located in the historic region of Tur Abdin. Etymology The Syriac name of the town is derived from "ma'ṣartā" ("wine-press" in Syriac). History Maʿsarteh (today called Ömerli) is identified as the town of Madaranzu in Bit-Zamani, which was conquered by Ashurnasirpal II in 879 BC. It is later mentioned by Theophylact Simocatta and George of Cyprus as a '' kastron'' called Matzaron (; ). Ömerli, Halfeti
Ömerli, formerly known as Amara, is a neighbourhood of the municipality and district of Halfeti, Şanlıurfa Province, Turkey. Its population is 545 (2022). The village is the birthplace of Abdullah Öcalan, the founder of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), who was born there on April 4, 1949. His birthday is annually celebrated by thousands of Kurds. On April 4, 2009, a group of 3,000 Kurds was marching towards Amara to celebrate Öcalan's 60th birthday. The march was interrupted by Turkish authorities resulting in clashes. Two men lost their lives. Ömerli Dam
Ömerli Dam () is a rock-fill dam in Istanbul Province, Turkey. Ömerli Dam is located in Çekmeköy district of Istanbul Province. The rock-fill dam was built by the Turkish State Hydraulic Works on the Riva Creek to provide tap water for the city. Construction started in 1968, and the dam went in service in 1973. The volume of the earth mass used in the dam is . The dam has a thalweg height of . It forms the reservoir Lake Ömerli (), which has a surface of and water capacity of . In 1999, a sanitation project was launched to protect the reservoir from waste water pollution. In the time span of the last twenty years after the construction of the dam, the surrounding area saw a rapid urbanization that brought the risk of pollution of the reservoir. The project foresaw the collection of waste water by collectors and treatment in sewage plants before emptying into the sea. Galini (; ) is a deserted village in Cyprus, north-west of Lefka in the Morphou Bay area. It is under the '' de facto'' control of Northern Cyprus. History In the census of 1960, Galini had an exclusively Greek Cypriot Greek Cypriots (, ) are the ethnic Greek population of Cyprus, forming the island's largest ethnolinguistic community. According to the 2023 census, 719,252 respondents recorded their ethnicity as Greek, forming almost 99% of the 737,196 Cypri ... population of 1,295. Galini had a church dedicated to St. John the Theologian and five chapels. The chapels belong to St. Barbara, St. Nikolas, St. Kournoutos, St. Mavra and St. Eleftherios.
