Óli Niklái Skaalum
Óli Niklái Skaalum (April 29, 1849 – January 29, 1924) was a Faroese teacher and a politician for the Union Party. Skaalum was born in Hvalba. He received his teaching degree in 1872, after which he taught in Sandvík until 1909 and in Hvalba until 1920. He was a member of the Hvalba municipal council from 1875 to 1915 and served as mayor from 1888 to 1915. Skaalum was one of the founders of the Union Party, and he served in the Faroese Parliament as the party's representative for Suðuroy Suðuroy (pronounced: suːwʊrɔior suːri ‘South Island’, ) is the southernmost of the Faroe Islands. Hvalba
Hvalba () is a village and a municipality in the Faroe Islands, which consists of Hvalba, Nes-Hvalba and Sandvík. The village spreads around the bottom of a deep inlet, Hvalbiarfjørður, in the northeast of Suðuroy. Population Hvalba is one of the larger villages in the Faroe Islands. The total population of Hvalba Municipality (''Hvalbiar Kommuna'') is 639 as of March 2022; the population of Hvalba is 569 and the population of Sandvík is 70. The small village Nes is often called Nes-Hvalba, because there are two other villages with the same name. Nes is located on the southern arm of the fjord Hvalbiarfjørður, opposite of Hvalba. Sandvík
Sandvík (pronounced , "Sandy Bay"; ) is the northernmost village of the island of Suðuroy in the Faroe Islands. It is situated on the northern side of a shallow fjord. The village was previously known as Hvalvík (''Bay of Whales''). It changed its name to Sandvík in 1913 as there was too much confusion regarding mail delivery, because there is another village named Hvalvík on Streymoy. The village had originally been known as Sandvík during the Viking Age. History Sandvík is the place where Viking chief Sigmundur Brestisson was murdered after his long swim from Skúvoy in an attempt to flee from Tróndur í Gøtu. When Sigmundur came ashore exhausted to what he thought would be safety, the local farmer Torgrímur Illi fell upon him with his sons, and decapitated him for the golden bracelet he wore on his arm. Suðuroy
Suðuroy (pronounced: suːwʊrɔior suːri ‘South Island’, ) is the southernmost of the Faroe Islands. The island covers 163.7 square kilometres (63.2 sq mi). In 2018 the population was 4,601. Jens Pauli Skaalum (December 18, 1893 – August 1, 1978) was a Faroese teacher and a politician for the Union Party. Skaalum was born in Hvalba, the son of the teacher and politician Óli Niklái Skaalum and Elsebeth Helena Niclasen. He graduated from the Jonstrup Normal School () in Copenhagen as a primary school teacher in 1914, and then taught in Porkeri from 1914 to 1920 and in Hvalba from 1920 to 1960. He was married to Astrid Larsen from Porkeri.
