Ñico Saquito
Benito Antonio Fernández Ortiz (13 February 1901 – 4 August 1982), better known as Ñico Saquito, was a Cuban trova songwriter, guitarist and singer. He is widely considered the most prolific and successful composer of guarachas, most of which he wrote during his stint as a member of Los Guaracheros de Oriente. Among his most enduring compositions are "Cuidadito compay gallo", "MarÃa Cristina", "Adiós compay gato", "Al vaivén de mi carreta", "Camina como Chencha" and "Amarrao compé". Life and career Saquito was born on 13 February 1901, in Santiago de Cuba, the capital of the Santiago de Cuba Province (known as the Oriente Province between 1905 and 1976), notable for its traditional ''trova'' music. Guaracha Singers
The guaracha () is a genre of music that originated in Cuba, of rapid tempo and comic or picaresque lyrics. The word has been used in this sense at least since the late 18th and early 19th century. Guarachas were played and sung in musical theatres and in working-class dance salons. They became an integral part of bufo comic theatre in the mid-19th century. During the later 19th and the early 20th century the guaracha was a favourite musical form in the brothels of Havana. The guaracha survives today in the repertoires of some trova musicians, conjuntos and Cuban-style big bands. Areito (record Label)
Areito is a Cuban record label founded in 1964 as the primary imprint of EGREM, which is based in Havana. Areito is named after the recording studio from which the vast majority of its catalog stems, which in turn was named after the Areito, TaÃno ritual of the same name. The record studio had established in 1944, originally named Panart studios and was associated with recording engineer Ramón S. Sabat, Ramón Sabat's Panart record label. The 1959 government nationalized the Cuban music industry, including the associated studio and record company in 1961. Since the 1960s, Areito/EGREM has been the main music company in Cuba, managing most of the recording, manufacture and distribution of albums, EPs and singles in the country. Cuarteto Patria is a musical group from Santiago de Cuba. It was founded in 1939 by Francisco Cobas la O (Pancho Cobas), who served as the Director; along with Emilia Gracia, Rigoberto HechaverrÃa (Maduro), and Rey Caney (Reinaldo Hierrezuelo la O). The group's original style was traditional trova, which included boleros and some música campesina (countryside music). Over time, both the members and the music evolved, and Eliades Ochoa also became a member of the group. In 1978, Ochoa was invited by Cobas to lead the group, and he accepted the offer on the condition that he would introduce new musical works into the group's repertoire.
