Île-des-Chênes is an unincorporated community in Manitoba, Canada, within the Rural Municipality of Ritchot. The community is located 13 kilometres south-east of the provincial capital Winnipeg, just east of Highway 59. Île-des-Chênes is a French name, translating to Island of the Oaks, coming from a nearby stand of oaks on higher ground, where early settlers sought refuge from the annual spring floodwaters. History The first settlers, francophones from Quebec, arrived in the 1880s. The post office was established in 1890 and the local Catholic parish was founded in 1905. Telephone service came to Île-des-Chênes in 1920, but electricity only arrived in 1946. The credit union was established in 1945. Île-des-Chênes North Stars
The Île-des-Chênes North Stars are a Canadian senior ice hockey team based out of Ile des Chenes, Manitoba. The North Stars were 2003 Allan Cup champions and currently play in the South Eastern Manitoba Hockey League. History Longtime members of the now-defunct senior/intermediate Hanover-Tache Hockey League until 2005, the North Stars began competing dually at the Senior A and AAA levels in 1996. The North Stars competed as an independent Senior AAA club from 2005 to 2018 and dropped back to Senior A status upon joining the CSHL in 2020. Allan Cup competition The North Stars made their first Allan Cup appearance in 1998. They captured their first and only national championship at the 2003 Allan Cup in Dundas, Ontario. The Rural Municipality of Ritchot () is a rural municipality (RM) in the Winnipeg Capital Region, bordering the south side of Winnipeg in Manitoba, Canada. The separately-administered town of Niverville lies adjacent to its southeast, between it and the Rural Municipality of Hanover. Provincial Trunk Highway 59 (PTH 59) is a major provincial highway in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It runs from the Lancaster-Tolstoi Border Crossing (where it meets with U.S. Highway 59), through the city of Winnipeg, north to 8th Avenue in Victoria Beach on Lake Winnipeg. Route description PTH 59 is a four-lane at-grade expressway from Provincial Road 210 south of Île-des-Chênes, through Winnipeg, to the Brokenhead Ojibway Nation, except for a two-kilometre section of six-lane road between the North Perimeter Highway (PTH 101) and Provincial Road 202. Allan Cup
The Allan Cup is the trophy awarded annually to the senior ice hockey champions of Canada. It was donated by Sir Montagu Allan of Ravenscrag, Montreal, and has been competed for since 1909. It was most recently won by the Wentworth Gryphins in 2025. History In 1908, a split occurred in the competition of ice hockey in Canada. The top amateur teams left the Eastern Canada Amateur Hockey Association, which allowed professionals, to form the new Inter-Provincial Amateur Hockey Union (IPAHU), a purely amateur league. A boil-water advisory (BWA), boil-water notice, boil-water warning, boil-water order, or boil order is a Public health, public-health advisory or directive issued by governmental or other health authorities to consumers when a community's drinking water is or could be contaminated by pathogens.
