Émile Roche
Émile Roche (Estaires, 24 September 1893 – 1990), was a French economist, radical politician and journalist. He was born the son of a grocer, who entered politics after the First World War. He was best known as a supporter of the politician Joseph Caillaux from 1927 during the 1930s through the newspaper he founded ''La République.'' Under the German Occupation, Émile Roche wrote for the collaborationist newspaper ''Les Nouveaux Temps'' where he criticised the parties of the 1930s and supported the single party. After the Liberation he intervened on behalf of the former German ambassador to Vichy, Otto Abetz in 1950. From 1954 to 1974 he was the Président of the French Economic, Social and Environmental Council, French Conseil économique.. conseil-economique-et-social.fr He was also well known as a distinguished collector of art. Estaires
Estaires (; ) is a commune in the Nord department of the Hauts-de-France region in northern France. The town gives its name to a type of chicken bred in the area: the Estaires chicken. Geography Estaires is located in French Flanders, in the Lys valley at an altitude of 16 m. The Meteren Becque flows into the Lys at this point. It stands 30 km west of Lille, 17 km from Hazebrouck and 14 km from Armentieres. It is twinned with Wielun in Poland. History The town stands on the site of a Roman Gaul city called ''Minariacum'' which features in the Antonine Itinerary, in the area of the town now known as Pont d'Estaires. Its earlier name is probably Celtic, but the etymology is obscure. Joseph Caillaux
Joseph-Marie-Auguste Caillaux (; 30 March 1863 – 22 November 1944) was a French politician of the French Third Republic, Third Republic. He was a leader of the French Radical Party and Minister of Finance, but his progressive views in opposition to the military alienated him from conservative elements. He was accused of corruption, but was cleared by a parliamentary commission. This political weakness strengthened the right wing elements in the Radical Party. Biography He was the son of Eugène Caillaux. After studying law and following lectures at the École des Sciences Politiques, he entered the civil service in 1888 as an inspector of finance, and spent most of his official career in Algiers. Otto Abetz
Otto Friedrich Abetz (26 March 1903 – 5 May 1958) was a German diplomat, a Nazi official and a convicted war criminal during World War II. Abetz joined the Nazi Party and the SA in the early 1930s later becoming a member of the SS. Abetz played a significant role in strengthening ties between Nazi Germany and Vichy France during World War II. In 1940, after the German occupation of France, he was appointed German ambassador to France. Abetz played a significant role in strengthening ties between Nazi Germany and the collaborationist Vichy government. Abetz played a significant role in facilitating the persecution and deportation of Jews by the Nazi regime from France during the Holocaust. After Germany's defeat in 1945, Abetz was captured and later stood trial at the Nuremberg Trials. He was found guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity, and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. He was released in 1954 for health reasons and died in a car crash in 1958. Early years A ...
