Émile Doux
Émile Doux (1798–1876), known in Portugal and Brazil as EmÃlio Doux, was a French theatre actor, director, playwright and impresario in Portugal and later in Brazil. Career Little is known about the early life of Doux, other than that he was a graduate of the ''Conservatoire de Paris''. In the 1830s he joined a theatre company led by Paul Charton and his wife that travelled to the Portuguese capital, Lisbon, to give some performances in French, with Roux first performing with the company at the ''Teatro da Rua dos Condes'' in January 1835. The company presented romantic dramas by Victor Hugo and Alexandre Dumas, comedies by Eugène Scribe, melodramas and vaudevilles. With the return of the company to France, Doux decided to stay in Lisbon, becoming one of the most important characters in Lisbon's theatrical history, working as an impresario and as a rehearser. EmÃlia Cândida (18231908) was a popular 19th century Portuguese actress. Early life EmÃlia Cândida Madeira was born in the Portuguese capital of Lisbon on 18 May 1823, the daughter of poor farmers. Her name was given to her in honour of her baptismal godmother. She first danced on the stage at the ''Teatro Nacional de São Carlos'' in Lisbon, while her debut as an actor was in the city of Beja as part of a company organized by her cousin, the actor António Augusto Xavier de Macedo. Ana Cardoso was a 19th-century Portuguese actress. Early life Little is known about the early life of Ana Cardoso, other than that she was born in the town of Lamego in the Viseu District of Portugal in around 1830. No records of birth or marriage have been found and the death certificate provides no information. Career Arriving in Lisbon, Cardoso became a disciple of Émile Doux. He was French and had arrived in Portugal at the end of the Portuguese Civil War in 1835 with a French theatre company and stayed after the company returned to France, taking charge of a new Portuguese theatre company. She debuted at the '' Teatro D. Fernando'' in 1850, in the comic opera ''A Batalha de Montereau'' (The Battle of Montereau).
