Édouard Nzambimana (20 December 1945 – September 2015) was Prime Minister of Burundi from 12 November 1976 until 13 October 1978, when the post was abolished. He then became foreign affairs minister, serving until 1982. The president of Burundi, officially the President of the Republic ( French: ''Président de la République''), is the head of state and head of government of the Republic of Burundi. The president is also commander-in-chief of the National Defence Force. The office of the presidency was established when Michel Micombero declared Burundi a republic on 28 November 1966. The first constitution to specify the powers and duties of the president was the constitution of 1974 adopted in 1976. The constitution, written by Micombero, affirmed Micombero's position as the first president of Burundi. This article lists the prime ministers of Burundi since the formation of the post of Prime Minister of Burundi in 1961 until the present day. The office of Prime Minister was most recently abolished in 1998, and reinstated in 2020 with the appointment of Alain-Guillaume Bunyoni. Albin Nyamoya (27 July 1924 – 31 January 2001) was the Prime Minister of Burundi from 6 April 1964 — 7 January 1965 and again from 14 July 1972— 5 June 1973. Early life Nyamoya was born in 1924 in Ibuye. He was ethnically a Tutsi. He was educated at the Mugera Catholic Seminary and the Groupe Scolaire d'Astrida, studying veterinary science at the latter institution. He thereafter worked as a veterinarian assistant. Political career Nyamoya was elected to the National Assembly in 1961 as a member of the Union for National Progress (UPRONA) party. He served as Interior Minister from 1963 to 1964. He was re-elected to the assembly in May 1965. He was a member of UPRONA. He is an ethnic Hutu and was appointed by the Tutsi President Pierre Buyoya in an unsuccessful attempt to appease Hutus by giving a few high government posts to them. Sibomana was the first Hutu prime minister since 1973 and had been the governor of Muramvya Province previously.
