Édouard Mwangachuchu
Édouard Mwangachuchu Hizi (born 30 September 1953) is a Congolese businessman and politician. He is a member of the National Assembly for Masisi, North Kivu. Mwangachuchu previously served as member of the Senate. He was sentenced to death in October 2023 on charges including treason. He has appealed the sentence. Life Mwangachuchu was born on 30 September 1953 in Rutshuru. As a politician Mwangachuchu served as an independent senator in 2007. He later became a member of the National Assembly for Masisi, North Kivu. In November 2020 he asked Minister of Mines, , for explanations regarding the tensions in Kivu. Mwangachuchu is owner of the Bisunzu mining company (Société minière de Bisunzu, SMB), which mines coltan in the Rubaya mines. He is also president of the National Congress for the Defence of the People. On 1 March 2023, Mwangachuchu was arrested in Kinshasa. National Assembly (Democratic Republic Of The Congo)
The National Assembly is the lower house and main legislative political body of the Parliament of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is one of the two legislative bodies along with the Senate. The March 23 Movement (), often abbreviated as M23 and also known as the Congolese Revolutionary Army (), is a Congolese Rwandan-backed rebel paramilitary group. Masisi Territory
Masisi Territory is a territory which is located within the North Kivu Province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Its political headquarters are located in the town of Masisi. Overview Masisi territory has an area of 4734 km. Masisi Territory is administratively subdivided into four sectors: Bahunde, Bashali, Katoyi, and Osso. Masisi is bordered by Walikale Territory on the west and north, Rutshuru Territory to the northeast, Nyiragongo Territory and Goma to the east, and South Kivu to the south. Language-wise French is the DRC's administrative language. The most common language for a majority of the local population (56%) is Swahili. Congolese of Rwandan descent speak Kinyarwanda (10%) they migrated from Rwanda, during the Belgium labourer migration, Hunde (20%). National Congress For The Defence Of The People
The National Congress for the Defence of the People (, CNDP) was a Congolese Rwandan-backed paramilitary rebel group active in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo during the Kivu conflict. Established on 26 July 2006 by Laurent Nkunda in North Kivu Province, the CNDP emerged as the immediate successor to the Congolese Rally for Democracy–Goma (RCD-Goma), another Rwandan-sponsored rebel faction. With strong military and financial ties to Rwanda, the CNDP positioned itself as a defender of the Tutsi population and claimed to be combating the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), a pretext it used to challenge President Joseph Kabila's government while engaging in the illicit extraction and commercialization of natural resources.
