Ærøskøbing Municipality
Ærøskøbing Municipality (, ) is a former municipality of Funen County on the island of Ærø. The municipality was formed in 1970 and disestablished in 2006 when it was integrated into Ærø Municipality. The municipality was located on the western portion of the island of Ærø. Its neighboring municipality Marstal occupied the eastern portion of the island. To the north and west are the waters of the Little Belt. To the south is the Baltic Sea, and to the southeast are the waters of Marstal Bay (''Marstal Bugt''). History Before the municipality was established, the administrative region was originally named West-Æro Municipality (Danish:''Vest-Æro Kommune''), and . Counties Of Denmark
The Counties of Denmark () were former subdivisions of metropolitan Denmark and overseas territories, used primarily for administrative regions, with each county having its own council with substantial powers. Originally there had been twenty-four counties, but the number was reduced to roughly fourteen in 1970 – the number fluctuated slightly over the next three decades. In 2006 there were thirteen traditional counties as well as three municipalities with county status (the island of Bornholm, which was a county from 1660 until 2002, became a ''regional municipality'' with county powers, but only briefly from 2003 until 2006). Funen County
Funen County () is a former county (Danish: '' amt'') in central Denmark, comprising the islands of Funen, Langeland, Tåsinge, Ærø, and approximately 90 other islands, of which only 25 are inhabited. The county was formed on 1 April 1970, comprising the former counties of Odense and Svendborg. The county was abolished from 1 January 2007, when it merged into Region of Southern Denmark (''Region Syddanmark''). The county employed around 20,000 people working in more than 160 institutions located all over Funen. Insignia Funen County's coat of arms showed three connected gold hop leaves on a field of red, representing three former counties of Odense, Svendborg and Assens. Ærø
Ærø () is one of the Denmark, Danish Baltic Sea islands, and part of the Region of Southern Denmark, Southern Denmark Region. Since 1 January 2006 all of Ærø has constituted a single Municipalities of Denmark, municipality, known as Ærø Municipality, Ærø Kommune. Before that date, there were two municipalities on the island: Ærøskøbing Municipality, Ærøskøbing Kommune in the west and Marstal Municipality, Marstal Kommune in the east. This merger was part of a reform of the public sector with the laws being effective as of 26 June 2005. This merger was allowed to happen one year before the other municipalities merged as there had already been an island-wide referendum with a majority of voters for the merger. Ærø Municipality () is a '' kommune'' occupying the 88 km² island of Ærø in Denmark in the Region of Southern Denmark as of 1 January 2007, and in 2006 in Funen County. Marstal Municipality
Marstal municipality, is a former municipality ( Danish, '' kommune'') in Funen County on the island of Ærø in southern Denmark. Since 1 January 2006 it has been part of Ærø municipality. Its territory included the islands of Birkholm and Halmø, and covered an area of 17 km2. In 2005, it had a total population of 3,208. Its last mayor was Karsten Landro, a member of the Conservative People's Party (''Det Konservative Folkeparti'') political party. Its main town and site of its municipal council was the town of Marstal. Marstal municipality was the smallest municipality in Funen County. Little Belt
The Little Belt (, ) is a strait between the island of Funen and the Jutland Peninsula in Denmark. It is one of the three Danish straits, Danish Straits that drain and connect the Baltic Sea to the Kattegat strait, which drains west to the North Sea and Atlantic Ocean. Geography The Little Belt is about long and to wide, and its deepest point is at Marens Hul west of the island of Fænø, at , which makes it deeper than its sister strait, the Great Belt. Baltic Sea
The Baltic Sea is an arm of the Atlantic Ocean that is enclosed by the countries of Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Sweden, and the North European Plain, North and Central European Plain regions. It is the world's largest brackish water basin. The sea stretches from 53°N to 66°N latitude and from 10°E to 30°E longitude. 1970 Danish Municipal Reform
The 1970 Danish Municipal Reform was an extensive administrative reform in Denmark which on 1 April 1970 reduced the number of Danish municipalities from 1,098 to 277 and the number of counties from 25 to 14. The reform also abolished the last legal privileges of the market towns ( sing. Danish: ''købstad''). The 1970 reform was followed by another municipal reform in 2007, namely the Structural Reform. This reform would further reduce the number of municipalities in Denmark, and replace the counties with regions. Ærøskøbing
Ærøskøbing () is a town on the island of Ærø, Denmark. The suffix -købing means a trade town in the languages that derive from Old Norse. Ærøskøbing's houses and streets are delicately restored to retain the character of the olden days. Most of them are one story tall, and the oldest ones date back to 1645. In the old part of the town are many fine examples of the work of skilled bricklayers, carpenters, and blacksmiths. Behind the idyllic façade of the town is a vibrant and active town that has solved successive generations' housing needs for centuries. Ærøskøbing was awarded the Europa Nostra prize in 2002.
