Central Finland (; ) is a Regions of Finland, region ( / ) in Finland. It borders the regions of Päijät-Häme, Pirkanmaa, South Ostrobothnia, Central Ostrobothnia, North Ostrobothnia, Northern Savonia, North Savo, and Southern Savonia, South Savo. The city of Jyväskylä is the regional centre and by far the largest city in the area. Central Finland lies slightly south of the geographical centre of Finland. The landscape is hilly and a large part of the province belongs to the Finnish Lakeland. The largest lake in the very water-based region is Lake Päijänne (1,080 km2). Äänekosken Maalaiskunta
Äänekosken maalaiskunta (abbreviated as ''Äänekosken mlk'', ) is a former municipality of Finland in the Central Finland region. It was consolidated with the ''kauppala'' of Äänekoski in 1969. It bordered Äänekoski, Suolahti, Laukaa, Uurainen, Saarijärvi, Konginkangas and Sumiainen. Geography Lakes The Keitele and Pyhäjärvi are partially within the borders of the former municipality. History The toponym ''Äänekoski'' was first mentioned in 1455 as ''Ænækoski laxefiskeri'' (Swedish for "salmon fishery on the Äänekoski rapids"). According to Terho Itkonen, the name of the rapids is of Sámi origin, having been derived from a word meaning "big, large" (compare Northern Sámi ''eanas'', "most"). Konginkangas
Konginkangas is a settlement and former municipality of Finland in the Central Finland region. It was consolidated with Äänekoski in 1993. The municipality bordered Äänekoski, Saarijärvi, Kannonkoski, Viitasaari, Vesanto, Konnevesi and Sumiainen. Until 1969, it bordered Äänekosken maalaiskunta instead of Äänekoski. The national road 4 goes through Konginkangas and the distance between Äänekoski proper and Konginkangas is about 20 km. Suolahti
Suolahti is a former town and municipality of Finland. It is located next to Lake Keitele in the province of Western Finland and is part of the Central Finland region. Suolahti was merged into Äänekoski together with Sumiainen in 2007. History The village was initially known as Paadentaipale; the first mentions of the current name come from are from the 16th century. The opening of the railroad in 1898 industrialized Suolahti and increased the waterborne traffic on Keitele, for which Suolahti provided a railway harbour at its south end. The same year, a steam-mill started operating which was soon followed by other industrial facilities. This sped up population growth and urban development. In the first three decades of the 20th century, the population increased to two thousand. It gained town status in 1977. Sumiainen
Sumiainen is a former municipality of Finland. It is located in the province of Western Finland and is part of the Central Finland region. The municipality had a population of 1,293 (2003) and covered an area of 307.93 km2 of which 77.34 km2 is water. The population density was 5.6 inhabitants per km2. Sumiainen consolidated to Äänekoski together with Suolahti in 2007. The municipality was unilingually Finnish. The municipality was also known as "Sumiais" in Swedish. Konnevesi is a municipality of Finland. It is located in the former province of Western Finland and is part of the Central Finland region.
