Ähtäri () is a town and municipality of Finland. It is located in the South Ostrobothnia region. The town has a population of () and covers an area of of which is water. The population density is . Ähtäri is located southeast of Seinäjoki. The municipality is unilingually Finnish. Ähtäri is known for its zoo and hotel Mesikämmen designed by Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen which is partly built within bedrock. The biggest lake in the area is Ähtärinjärvi. There is also a relatively old and small board mill called Vääräkosken Pahvi in Ähtäri. The largest private sector employers are Inhan Tehtaat, Silver-Veneet, Tankki, and Muovilami. Ähtäri Zoo
Ähtäri Zoo is a zoo in Ähtäri, Finland that was opened in 1973. It is the second largest zoo in Finland, and is a member of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA). History Köpi the moose was the first animal at the zoo. After several years, gray wolf, wolves and lynxes were added. However the zoo's most famous residents are probably the bears, Santeri and his mate Santra, who have lived at the zoo almost since its founding. In 2003 the Korkeasaari Zoo in Helsinki gifted snow leopards to Ähtäri Zoo for their 30th anniversary. By 2006 there were 65 animals, mostly from the Temperate coniferous forest, coniferous zone. Since its establishment, one goal of the Ähtäri Zoo has been to create natural living conditions for the animals. Ähtärinjärvi
Ähtärinjärvi is a lake in Finland. It is situated in the municipalities of Ähtäri, Alajärvi (formerly Lehtimäki) and Soini in the Southern Ostrobothnia region in western Finland. The lake is part of the Kokemäenjoki basin and drains through a chain of lakes that includes among others the lakes Toisvesi and Tarjanne in the Pirkanmaa region, where the lake Tarjanne in its turn drains into the Lake Ruovesi.
