The Independence Party ( ) is a Conservatism, conservative List of political parties in Iceland, political party in Iceland. It is currently the second largest party in the Althing, Alþingi, with 14 seats. The chairman of the party is Guðrún Hafsteinsdóttir and the vice chairman of the party is Jens Garðar Helgason. The (; ), anglicised as Althingi or Althing, is the supreme national parliament of Iceland. It is the oldest surviving parliament in the world. The Althing was founded in 930 at (' thing fields' or 'assembly fields'), about east of what later became the country's capital, Reykjavík. After Iceland's union with Norway in 1262, the Althing lost its legislative power, which was not restored until 1904 when Iceland gained home rule from Denmark. For 641 years, the Althing did not serve as the parliament of Iceland; ultimate power rested with the Norwegian, and subsequently the Danish throne. ''Kjarninn'' () was an Icelandic online newspaper founded in August 2013. Previously ''Kjarninn'' was a weekly digital news magazine served via Apple App Store aimed at tablet computer users but PDFs were also available at the website. Since September 2014 ''Kjarninn was an online-only newspaper. The founders of ''Kjarninn'' originally worked at 365's free newspaper ''Fréttablaðið'', which maintained a virtual monopoly on the market (69% in 2004).
