ﾃ］gel Hernﾃ｡ndez (born August 26, 1961) is a Cuban-American former professional baseball Umpire (baseball), umpire. He worked in the National League (baseball), National League from 1991 to 1999 and worked throughout Major League Baseball (MLB) from 2000 until his retirement in May 2024. Hernﾃ｡ndez was involved in several controversial incidents and was widely criticized by players, coaches, and fans throughout his career. Hernﾃ｡ndez umpired eight League Championship Series, three Major League Baseball All-Star Game, All-Star Games, the 2023 World Baseball Classic, and the 2002 World Series, 2002 and 2005 World Series. In July 2017, Hernﾃ｡ndez filed an unsuccessful federal lawsuit against MLB, alleging that racial discrimination kept him from being promoted to crew chief and from umpiring future World Series games.
