Álvur Kirke
Álvur Kirke (born 29 July 1939 in Vágur) is a former Faroese people, Faroese docker and politician (Miðflokkurin, MF). He worked on the wharf in Tórshavn from 1972 onwards. He was one of the founders of the Christian democratic party Centre Party (Faroe Islands), Miðflokkurin in 1992, and was a member of the board of the party until 2004. Kirke was chairman of the party from 1992 until 1994, and again from 1999 until 2001, succeeded on both occasions by Jenis av Rana. Kirke was a candidate for the Løgting, Lagtinget in 1994 Faroese parliamentary election, 1994, 1998 Faroese parliamentary election, 1998, 2002 Faroese parliamentary election, 2002, 2004 Faroese parliamentary election, 2004 and 2008 Faroese parliamentary election, 2008 representing Suðurstreymoy, South Streymoy. Vágur
Vágur, meaning ''bay'' (), is a town and municipality on the island of Suðuroy, part of the Faroe Islands. It is situated on the east coast of the island on the Vágsfjørður fjord, and was founded in the fourteenth century. Expansion has meant that the nearby town of Nes, Vágur, Nes is now a suburb of Vágur. Vágur has a sports hall next to the football grounds on Vesturi á Eiðinum Stadium, Eiðinum, near Vágseiði, a swimming pool by the school and a clinic which offers the services of doctors, nurses and dentists. There is also a hotel, one bank and various shops. The port area, which is 14 m in depth, is situated on the northern part of the fjord. The port authorities can offer services of piloting (lods), water and fire-fighting, and in connection with the harbour there is a modern fish factory and auctioneers for fish. Suðurstreymoy
Streymoy (, ) is the largest and most populated island of the Faroe Islands. The capital, Tórshavn, is located on its southeast coast. The name means "island of currents". It also refers to the largest region of the country that also includes the islands of Hestur, Koltur and Nólsoy. Geography The island is oblong in shape and stretches roughly in northwest–southeast direction with a length of and a width of around . There are two deeply-indented fjords in the southeast: Kollafjørður and Kaldbaksfjørður. 2008 Faroese Parliamentary Election
General elections were held in the Faroe Islands on 19 January 2008, the latest possible date. The Self-Government Party and the Centre Party gained a seat each while the Social Democratic Party lost a seat. It had been considered to amend the election law to hold the election two weeks later to pass a number of important bills before the election, but in the end the negotiations on this failed and the election was called on 2007-12-07. Prior to this election, the electoral system was changed in 2007 from a system with seven multi-member constituencies, which had some elements of mixed member proportional voting, to a system with a single constituency for the whole country in order to reduce disproportionality. Candidates Hin Stuttligi Flokkurin ( English: ''The Funny Party''), the joke political party founded in 2004 by Johan Dalsgaard, got 747 votes in the Faroese parliament election in 2004. Faroese People
Faroese people or Faroe Islanders (; ) are an ethnic group native to the Faroe Islands. The Faroese are of mixed Norse and Gaelic origins. About 21,000 Faroese live in neighbouring countries, particularly in Denmark, Iceland and Norway. Most Faroese are citizens of the Kingdom of Denmark, in which the Faroe Islands are a constituent nation. The Faroese language is one of the North Germanic languages and is closely related to Icelandic and to western Norwegian varieties. Origins The first known settlers of the Faroe Islands were Gaelic hermits and monks who arrived in the 6th century. Løgting
The Løgting (pronounced ; ) is the unicameral parliament of the Faroe Islands, an autonomous territory within the Danish Realm. The name literally means "''Law Thing''"—that is, a law assembly—and derives from Old Norse ''lǫgþing'', which was a name given to ancient assemblies. A ''ting'' or ''þing'' has existed on the Faroe Islands for over a millennium and the Løgting was the highest authority on the islands in the Viking era. From 1274 to 1816 it functioned primarily as a judicial body, whereas the modern Løgting established in 1852 is a parliamentary assembly, which gained legislative power when home rule was introduced in 1948. Together with the Manx Tynwald and the Icelandic Alþing, the Løgting is one of the oldest surviving parliaments in the world, all three holding lineages to the old Norse assemblies of mainland Europe.
