Álvaro Mejía (footballer)
Álvaro Mejía Pérez (born 18 January 1982) is a Spanish former professional footballer who played primarily as a central defender. Club career Born in Madrid, Mejía started his career at Las Rozas CF. He signed for Real Madrid in 1998, subsequently moving up the various youth ranks. Mejía joined the third team for 2001–02 but moved shortly after to the reserves, being admitted to the main squad the following season and making his La Liga debut in a 2–1 home win against Villarreal CF on 24 January 2004. He also appeared in the UEFA Champions League's round of 16 on 3 March (again playing the full match) in a 1–0 home victory over FC Bayern Munich. In May he renewed his contract until 2010, and he was subsequently put to use in different defensive positions. The following year, Mejía appeared in just eight games for Real Madrid in all competitions, adding 26 in the league over the next two seasons. The 2003–04 La Liga season was the 73rd since its establishment. It began on 30 August 2003, and concluded on 23 May 2004. Valencia were crowned champions for the sixth time in club history. Real Zaragoza, S.A.D. (), commonly referred to as Zaragoza, is a football club based in Zaragoza, Aragon, Spain, that currently competes in the Segunda División, the second tier of the Spanish football league system, Spanish league system. Zaragoza holds its home games at La Romareda. The first matches of the season were played on 27 August 2006, and the season ended on 17 June 2007. Carlos Diogo
Carlos Andrés Diogo Enseñat (born 18 July 1983) is a Uruguayan former footballer. A player of great physical strength, he operated as a defender or midfielder on the right side of the pitch. He amassed La Liga totals of 120 games and six goals over five seasons, representing in the competition Real Madrid and Zaragoza. He also played professionally, other than in his own country, in Argentina and Belgium. Diogo appeared for Uruguay in two Copa América tournaments. Club career Diogo was born in Montevideo. He started his career with River Plate Montevideo and Peñarol, moving to Argentina's Club Atlético River Plate in January 2005. In July 2005, Diogo signed with Spanish giants Real Madrid as compatriot Pablo García, but found first team opportunities scarce. Substitute (association Football)
In association football, a substitute is a player who is brought on to the pitch during a match in exchange for an existing player. Substitutions are generally made to replace a player who has become tired or injured, or who is performing poorly, or for tactical reasons (such as bringing a striker on in place of a defender). A player who has been substituted during a match takes no further part in the game, in games played under the standard International Football Association Board Laws of the Game. Substitutions were officially added to the Laws of the Game in 1958. Prior to this most games were played with no changes permitted at all, with occasional exceptions in cases of extreme injury or players not arriving to matches on time. The number of substitutes has risen over time as well as the number of reserve players allowed to be nominated.
