Álvaro Magaña
Álvaro Alfredo Magaña Borja (8 October 1925 – 10 July 2001) was a Salvadoran lawyer, economist and politician who was the president of El Salvador from 1982 to 1984. Biography He was born in Ahuachapán, El Salvador, and received his master's degree from the University of Chicago in 1952. He ran for president a first time in the 1967 election. He was president of the largest mortgage bank of El Salvador (Banco Hipotecario) before the 1982 election. He was sworn in by the President of the Constituent Assembly Roberto D'Aubuisson. Christian Democratic Party (El Salvador)
The Christian Democratic Party (, abbreviated PDC) is a Salvadoran political party. From 2011 to 2012, the party was renamed to Party of Hope (, abbreviated PES) before reverting to the Christian Democratic Party. The PDC has been led by Reinaldo Carballo since 2023. The PDC was founded in November 1960 in opposition of the Salvadoran military government, but in 1961, some members of the PDC left the party to form the National Conciliation Party (PCN) which would become the military's ruling party. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the PDC participated in various presidential and legislative elections which were marked by electoral fraud in the PCN's favor. In January 1980, following a coup d'état the year prior which overthrew the PCN's government, the PDC became involved in the ruling Revolutionary Government Junta. Roberto D'Aubuisson Arrieta (; 23 August 1943 – 20 February 1992) was a Salvadoran military officer, neo-fascist politician, and death squad leader. In 1981, he co-founded and became the first leader of the far-right Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA) and served as president of the Legislative Assembly from 1982 to 1983. He was a presidential candidate for 1984 presidential election, losing in the second round to José Napoleón Duarte, the former president of the Revolutionary Government Junta. After ARENA's loss in the 1985 legislative elections, D'Aubuisson stepped down in favor of Alfredo Cristiani and was designated as the party's honorary president for life. D'Aubuisson was named by the United Nations' Truth Commission for El Salvador as having ordered the assassination of Óscar Romero, the archbishop of San Salvador in 1980.
