He graduated from university in 1957, and tried but failed to enter various news companies, settling for darkroom work in Ginza for the photographer Osamu Yagi (). His university graduation work was published in the September issue of ''Sankei Camera.'' After meeting Kiyoji Ōtsuji, he entered Kuwasawa Design School in 1959, graduating in 1961. In May 1960 he had his first solo exhibition, of work from his series "Somethin' Else", in Ginza Garō.
