Etymology

Modern historians believe that the name Khachmaz derives from ''Khachmataki'' tribe of
Huns The Huns were a nomadic people who lived in Central Asia, the Caucasus, and Eastern Europe between the 4th and 6th century AD. According to European tradition, they were first reported living east of the Volga River, in an area that was part ...
, which transformed into ''Khacmaz'' in the middle of 7th century. In the second middle of the 7th century, part of the tribe migrated to the territory of the current Oghuz district and constructed the settlement and named Khachmar fortress.
