Etymology

The Hinterwälder (literally "from the backwoods") adopted its name about 150 years ago, when they were distinguished from their somewhat larger sister breed, the Vorderwälder (literally "from the frontwoods"). The scientific name is ''Bos primigenius f. taurus''.
