Some studies seem to suggest that ''Smilosuchus'' is congeneric with ''Leptosuchus'', as the enlarged crest could have been independently developed in ''Leptosuchus''. However, newer studies support the idea that ''Smilosuchus'' is distinct from the type species of ''Leptosuchus'', ''Leptosuchus crosbiensis''.
