Diterpenes are a class of chemical compounds composed of four isoprene units, often with the molecular formula C₂₀H₃₂. They are biosynthesized by plants, animals and fungi via the HMG-CoA reductase pathway, with geranylgeranyl pyrophosphate being a primary intermediate.
