United Nations Human Rights Council
The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), CDH is a United Nations body whose mission is to promote and protect human rights around the world. The Council has 47 members elected for staggered three-year terms on a regional group basis. The headquarters of the Council are at the United Nations Office at Geneva in Switzerland. The Council investigates allegations of breaches of human rights in United Nations member states and addresses thematic human rights issues like freedom of association and assembly, freedom of expression, freedom of belief and religion, women's rights, LGBT rights, and the rights of racial and ethnic minorities. The Council was established by the United Nations General Assembly on 15 March 2006 to replace the United Nations Commission on Human Rights (UNCHR, herein CHR). Federico Villegas (diplomat)
Federico Villegas Beltrán (born 24 March 1966) is an Argentine career diplomat, currently serving as president of the United Nations Human Rights Council during the year 2022. Villegas previously served as Permanent Representative of Argentina to the United Nations Office at Geneva from 2020, and as ambassador of Argentina to Mozambique from 2016 to 2020. Early life and education Villegas was born on 24 March 1966 in Santiago del Estero, Argentina. He studied law at the National University of Rosario, graduating in 1989, and later attained a ''cum laude'' Master of Arts in Liberal Studies degree from Georgetown University. His final dissertation was on "Co-operative Security in the post-Cold War". He has taught courses on international public law as an auxiliary professor at the National University of Rosario and at the University of Buenos Aires, and was a visiting faculty at the Walsh School of Foreign Service. Eleventh Emergency Special Session Of The United Nations General Assembly
The eleventh emergency special session of the United Nations General Assembly opened on 28 February 2022 at the United Nations headquarters. It addresses the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Maldivian politician Abdulla Shahid served as President of the body during this time. The session was temporarily adjourned on 2 March following the adoption of Resolution ES-11/1, which deplored the invasion and demanded a full withdrawal of Russian forces from Ukraine. Western European And Others Group
The Group of Western European and Other States, also known as the Western European and Other States Group or WEOG, is one of the five United Nations regional groups and is composed of 28 Member States mainly from Western Europe, but also from Oceania, Northern America, and Western Asia. The Group is a non-binding dialogue group where subjects concerning regional and international matters are discussed. Additionally, the Group works to help allocate seats on United Nations bodies by nominating candidates from the region. Unlike most other Regional Groups, WEOG is unusual in that geography is not the sole defining factor of its membership. The Group of Eastern European States (EEG) is one of the five United Nations regional groups and is composed of 23 Member States from Eastern, Central and Southern Europe. Staggered Elections
Staggered elections are elections where only some of the places in an elected body are up for election at the same time. The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, commonly known as the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) or the United Nations Human Rights Office, is a department of the Secretariat of the United Nations that works to promote and protect human rights that are guaranteed under international law and stipulated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948.
