Today Programme
''Today'', colloquially known as ''the Today programme'', is a long-running British morning news and current-affairs Radio program, radio programme on BBC Radio 4. Broadcast on Monday to Saturday from 6:00 am to 9:00 am, it is produced by BBC News and is the highest-rated programme on Radio 4 and one of the BBC's most popular programmes across its radio networks. In-depth political interviews and reports are interspersed with regular news bulletins, as well as ''Thought for the Day''. It has been voted the most influential news programme in Britain in setting the political agenda, with an average weekly listening audience around 7 million. History ''Today'' was launched on the BBC's BBC Home Service, Home Service on 28 October 1957 as a programme of "topical talks" to give listeners an alternative to listening to light music. Janet Quigley
Janet Muriel Alexander Quigley MBE (1902–1987) was a British radio broadcaster associated with the ''Today'' programme and ''Woman's Hour''. Life Quigley was born in Belfast in 1902, in the then United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. She went to college in Oxford, England, at Lady Margaret Hall. Quigley joined the BBC in 1930 and she was responsible for "talks" aimed at women. She was the fourth woman in this role since the first women's talk in 1923. The first was Ella FitzGerald who continued until 1926 when Elise Sprott MBE took over. There was an overlap with Margery Wace OBE in 1930-31 and Quigley took over the role in 1936. Quigley was given an MBE for her work organising talks on the radio during the war. She contacted Clemence Dane and asked her to contribute to her Sunday morning series, which she did, and later Quigley invited her on ''Woman's Hour''. Libby Purves
Elizabeth Mary Purves, (born 2 February 1950) is a British radio presenter, journalist and author. Early life and career Born in London, a diplomat's daughter, Purves was raised in her mother's Catholic faith and educated at convent schools in Israel, Bangkok, South Africa and France, and at Beechwood Sacred Heart School, Royal Tunbridge Wells. Purves won a scholarship to St Anne's College, Oxford, where she was awarded a first class degree in English. She was elected Librarian of the Oxford Union. In 1971, she joined the BBC as a studio manager. By the mid-1970s she was a regular presenter on BBC Radio Oxford where she could be frequently heard on the station's early morning shows. In 1976, she joined the BBC Radio 4's ''Today'' programme as a reporter and became the programme's first woman presenter, alongside Brian Redhead and John Timpson, two years later. Julian Holland (journalist)
Julian Holland (1925–2001) was an English journalist and radio editor. He was the editor of BBC Radio 4's ''Today'' programme from 1981 to 1986. Early life Holland was born in Farnworth in Lancashire on 29 March 1925; his father was a printer whose business was badly hit by the Great Depression. Brian Redhead
Brian Leonard Redhead (28 December 1929 – 23 January 1994) was a British author, journalist and broadcaster. He was a co-presenter of the ''Today'' programme on BBC Radio 4 from 1975 until 1993, shortly before his death. He was a great lover and promoter of the city of Manchester and the North West in general, where he lived for most of his career. Biography Redhead was born in Newcastle upon Tyne. He was the only child of Ernest Leonard Redhead, a silk screen printer and advertising agent, and his wife, Janet Crossley (née Fairley). He was educated at the Royal Grammar School in Newcastle. Yoko Ono
Yoko Ono ( ; ja, 小野 洋子, Ono Yōko, usually spelled in katakana ; born February 18, 1933) is a Japanese multimedia artist, singer, songwriter, and peace activist. Her work also encompasses performance art and filmmaking. Ono grew up in Tokyo and moved to New York City in 1953 with her family. She became involved with New York City's downtown artists scene in the early 1960s, which included the Fluxus group, and became well known in 1969 when she married English musician John Lennon of the Beatles. The couple used their honeymoon as a stage for public protests against the Vietnam War. Jack De Manio
Giovanni Batista "Jack" de Manio MC and Bar (26 January 1914 – 28 October 1988) was a British journalist, best known as a radio presenter. Life and work He was the son of Jean and Florence de Manio. His father was an Italian aviator, who died in a flying accident before he was born; his mother was Polish. He attended Aldenham School. As a young man he worked as an invoice clerk and then as a waiter. He joined the British Army and was commissioned as a second lieutenant into the Royal Sussex Regiment in 1939 and during World War II fought with the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) in 1939–40 and was awarded the Military Cross. Peter Donaldson
Peter Ian Donaldson (23 August 1945 – 2 November 2015) was an English newsreader on BBC Radio 4. Early life Donaldson was born in Cairo, Egypt, and moved to Cyprus in 1952 at the time of the overthrow of King Farouk. He was a frequent listener to the BBC World Service and the British Forces Broadcasting Service (BFBS). On his return to Britain, Donaldson was educated at Woolverstone Hall School, a state boarding school in Suffolk, from the age of 14. He left after taking O-levels at 16 and joined Sadler's Wells London in a backstage role. After working with the New Shakespeare Company at the Open Air Theatre in Regent's Park London, and appearing on stage at the Aldwych Theatre London with the Royal Shakespeare Company, he went to Sri Lanka to work on a film.
