''Summer Session'' is a dating simulation video game for the Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Linux platforms. The game was developed and published by Hanako Games and Italian studio Tycoon Games. It uses anime-style graphics and is written in English. It was released on July 2, 2008. Gameplay Players must balance their schedules in order to raise their character's statistics and pass school examinations. During play they encounter non-player characters and befriend them, aiming to find romance. Restarting the game after completion enables players to unlock additional endings. Reception Reviewers at Game Tunnel gave the game an average review score of 7.25/10, with the lowest review deriding it as "pervy" while the highest called the graphics "spectacular" and the writing "excellent", saying it "appealed to my inner otaku fanboy". Manifesto Games was an ecommerce retailer of downloadable computer games, specializing in independently developed games aimed at hardcore gamers. It was founded in October 2005 by Greg Costikyan and Dr. Johnny L. Wilson, former editor of ''Computer Gaming World'', and is based in New York City. The company was announced September 29, 2005. A , often abbreviated as VN, is a form of digital semi-interactive fiction. Dating sims, or , are video game subgenre of simulation games with romantic elements. Dating sims are often dialog-heavy and focus on time management. The player must befriend and carefully build and maintain a relationship with one or more characters. The gameplay is largely dependent on statistics. These games also often involve raising stats that reflect the player's skills and can be combined with other genres. Series such as ''Sakura Wars'' and ''Persona'' combine RPG gameplay with dating sim gameplay. Emily Short is an interactive fiction (IF) writer. She is perhaps best known for her debut game ''Galatea'' and her use of psychologically complex non-player characters (NPCs). Short has been called "a visionary in the world of text-based games for years," and is the author of over forty works of IF in addition to being chief editor of the IF Theory Book. Greg Costikyan (born July 22, 1959, in New York City), sometimes known under the pseudonym "Designer X", is an American game designer and science fiction writer. Costikyan's career spans nearly all extant genres of gaming, including: hex-based wargames, role-playing games, boardgames, card games, computer games, online games and mobile games. Several of his games have won Origins Awards. He co-founded Manifesto Games, now out of business, with Johnny Wilson in 2005. A non-player character (NPC), or non-playable character, is any character in a game that is not controlled by a player. The term originated in traditional tabletop role-playing games where it applies to characters controlled by the gamemaster or referee rather than by another player. In video games, this usually means a character controlled by the computer (instead of a player) that has a predetermined set of behaviors that potentially will impact gameplay, but will not necessarily be the product of true artificial intelligence.
