RTÉjr is an Irish free-to-air children's television channel operated by state-owned broadcaster RTÉ. The channel mainly targets a demographic of 2- to 7-year-olds, but some cartoons for older children also air. The channel is part of RTÉ KIDS. RTÉ One ( ga, RTÉ a hAon) is an Irish free-to-air flagship television channel owned and operated by Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ). It is the most-popular and most-watched television channel in the country and was launched as ''Telefís Éireann'' on 31 December 1961, it was renamed ''RTÉ'' in 1966, and it was renamed as RTÉ 1 upon the launch of RTÉ 2 in 1978. It is funded partly by the government's licence fee; the remainder of the funding is provided by commercial advertising. Because RTÉ is funded partly by the licence fee it shows considerably fewer advertisements than most other channels available in Ireland and Northern Ireland. RTÉ2 is an Television in the Republic of Ireland, Irish free-to-air television channel operated by public service broadcaster RTÉ. It was launched in 1978 as the Republic of Ireland's second television channel. History In the 1970s, the Irish government considered three options for the introduction of a second television service: the re-transmission of BBC One Northern Ireland, BBC1 Northern Ireland; authorization of an independent commercial service; or charging RTÉ with the establishment of a second national channel. It was the last of these that was finally chosen. The channel—only the second in the Republic—began transmissions at 20:00 on 2 November 1978, opening with a broadcast of a gala ceremony from Cork Opera House. Owing to a technical error, audio from BBC Two, BBC2 was played during the countdown instead of the proper soundtrack. TRTÉ
''TRTÉ'' is an Irish children's television program that airs on public service broadcaster RTÉ2. Its target demographic is people between 7 and 15 years of age. On some networks — Virgin Media Ireland, eir Vision and Vodafone TV—TRTÉ is a separate channel in the children's section that simulcasts TRTÉ on RTÉ2. In late 2016, significant cutbacks drove TRTÉ to downsize and carry fewer programmes such as '' News2day'' and other content for the 7 to 15-year-old age group. Its sister block for teenagers was dropped in 2016, while TRTÉ now begins at the earlier time of 4:30, and is now branded as RTÉ2. Since 2019, the brand has lost viewership. ''Puffin Rock'' is an Irish children's television series. Based on Puffin Island, situated off the Irish coast, the series follows a young puffin named Oona and her little brother Baba as they explore their world. The program is narrated by Chris O'Dowd. The series premiered on 12 January 2015. ''Pablo'' is a British children's television series that premiered on CBeebies on 2 October 2017. It was created by Grainne McGuinness. The series follows the adventures of Pablo, a five year old autistic boy, and his imaginary anthropomorphized animal friends, the Book Animals, who go on adventures in Pablo's 'Art World'. It is a hybrid of live action sequences and 2D animation. The series features a voice cast and writing team who are all autistic. It also broadcasts internationally, including on ABC Kids, RTÉjr, Nat Geo Kids, CBC Kids, Universal Kids, S4C and Netflix. ''The Den'' was a long-running popular children's television strand of Ireland's public broadcaster Raidió Teilifís Éireann. First broadcast on 29 September 1986 on RTÉ1, it moved to Network 2 two years later. ''Zara World'' is an Irish documentary series, produced by Fubar Films and screened on RTÉjr. The series premiered on Monday 13 October 2014. It features a seven-year-old girl called Zara who lives with her family in Dublin city. Filmed over six months, each episode features a small snapshot of Zara’s life. ''Punky'' is an Irish animated television series created by Lindsay J. Sedgwick and produced by Dublin based Monster Animation and Design. The series features the lead character as having Down syndrome, with the intention of being the first animated series to do so. Development The show's creative director is Jason Tammemagi, who has been involved in a number of animated shows for pre-school children, including Fluffy Gardens. The series is produced with the support of Down Syndrome Ireland, who also reviewed material during development and production of the series. Saorview
Saorview ( ) is the national digital terrestrial television (DTT) service in Ireland. It is owned by RTÉ and operated by 2RN. The service began operation on 29 October 2010 on a trial basis with a full launch on 26 May 2011. By legislation it was required to be available to approximately 90% of the population by end of October 2010 in a public testing capacity and nationwide by December 2011. The national public launch was preceded by a public information campaign, which began on 15 March 2011, with television and radio advertising beginning on 17 March 2011.
