QS Mark
The QS mark (from Qiye Shipin shengchan xuke, meaning authorised manufacturing for enterprises, formally the Industrial Product Manufacturing License) is a Chinese quality and safety mark for food, beverages and other products. Introduced in 2003, it is managed by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (GAQSIQ). The license is required for many product categories if they are both manufactured and sold in China. The mark was‘as deprecated in October 2018, and replaced with the SC system, which consists of the letters SC followed by a 14 digit number. SC means Sheng Chan (manufacturing) and the number is partially unique to each food processing facility. Quadratic Sieve
The quadratic sieve algorithm (QS) is an integer factorization algorithm and, in practice, the second fastest method known (after the general number field sieve). It is still the fastest for integers under 100 decimal digits or so, and is considerably simpler than the number field sieve. It is a general-purpose factorization algorithm, meaning that its running time depends solely on the size of the integer to be factored, and not on special structure or properties. It was invented by Carl Pomerance in 1981 as an improvement to Schroeppel's linear sieve. Quality Start
In baseball, a quality start is a statistic for a starting pitcher defined as a game in which the pitcher completes at least six innings and permits no more than three earned runs. The quality start has effectively replaced the 'complete game' as a meaningful measure of a starting pitcher's performance. ESPN.com no longer records complete games in its MLB 'stat' section. The quality start was developed by sportswriter John Lowe in 1985 while writing for ''The Philadelphia Inquirer''. In biology, quorum sensing or quorum signalling (QS) is the ability to detect and respond to cell population density by gene regulation. As one example, QS enables bacteria to restrict the expression of specific genes to the high cell densities at which the resulting phenotypes will be most beneficial. Many species of bacteria use quorum sensing to coordinate gene expression according to the density of their local population. In a similar fashion, some social insects use quorum sensing to determine where to nest. Quorum sensing in pathogenic bacteria activates host immune signaling and prolongs host survival, by limiting the bacterial intake of nutrients, such as tryptophan, which further is converted to serotonin. Quicksand
Quicksand is a colloid consisting of fine granular material (such as sand, silt or clay) and water. It forms in saturated loose sand when the sand is suddenly agitated. When water in the sand cannot escape, it creates a liquefied soil that loses strength and cannot support weight. Quicksand can form in standing water or in upward flowing water (as from an artesian spring). In the case of upward flowing water, forces oppose the force of gravity and suspend the soil particles. The saturated sediment may appear quite solid until a sudden change in pressure or shock initiates liquefaction. This causes the sand to form a suspension and lose strength. Quality Score
Quality Score is a metric used by Google, Yahoo! (called ''Quality Index''), Facebook (called Ad Quality) and Bing that influences the ad rank and cost per click (CPC) of ads. To determine the position of the ad on a search engine, each ad is allocated using a process which takes into account the bid and the Quality Score. Ads are then listed in descending order based on the result of that equation. The exact weight of Quality Score versus bid has not been revealed by any of the major search engines, and each company has stated that they reserve the right to continually adjust their ranking methodologies. Quality Score is also used to determine if a keyword is even eligible to enter the auction and show an ad. Keywords with low or poor Quality Score might not be eligible or ads might show rarely.
