Lydiate is a village and civil parishes in England, civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton on Merseyside, England but Historic counties of England, historically in Lancashire. It is located north of Maghull, with which it has a common history. At the United Kingdom Census 2001, 2001 Census the civil parish of Lydiate had a population of 6,672, reducing to 6,308 at the United Kingdom Census 2011, 2011 Census. History There is evidence that the settlement of the area dates back to at least the middle of the 10th century. Indeed, one possible root of the name is the Old English language, Old English ''hlid-geat'' meaning 'swing gate', which would have an association with animal farming. Lydiate is mentioned in the ''Domesday Book'', and is described as having a "wood a mile long", and there is evidence of the existence of extensive forests at that time, particularly of oak and elm. St Catherine's Chapel, Lydiate
St Catherine's Chapel, located in Lydiate, Merseyside, England, and known locally as Lydiate Abbey, was built c. 1500 for the private worship of the Ireland family, who held The Lordship of Lydiate, the Lydiate lordship from 1410–1673. Its use as a private chapel probably ceased c. 1550, following Henry VIII of England, Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries, though a small cemetery on the same grounds was still in use until the latter 19th century. The Chapel survives as a ruin, and is situated on the A5147, adjacent to the Scotch Piper Inn. It is now a Grade II* listed building, and a Scheduled Monument. In recent years, outdoor performances of Shakespeare have been held annually in the Chapel grounds. Markets are also held here in the summer where food and spices, face painting and carnival games are held. Lydiate Hall
Lydiate Hall was a 16th-century hall in Lydiate, Merseyside, England. The hall was a black-and-white half-timbered house, and was similar in design to Speke Hall. The hall was accompanied by a private chapel. It was a known Catholic house during the time of Elizabeth I of England, and the building contained at least three priest holes. The hall became a ruin in the early 20th century, and is now part of the grounds of Lydiate Hall Farm on Southport Road, Lydiate. It is now part of a conservation area, along with the nearby Scotch Piper Inn and St Catherine's Chapel. Its ruins were Grade II listed in 1968. Scotch Piper Inn
The Scotch Piper Inn in Lydiate, North West, England is the oldest pub in the historic county of Lancashire. The building dates from 1320 and is a Grade II* listed building. It is located on the A5147, from Liverpool and from Southport in the ceremonial county of Merseyside. It stands close to the site of Lydiate Hall and next to the remains of St Catherine's Chapel. History The fabric of the building is thought to date from 1320, but most of the current building is probably from the 16th century. It was originally known as "The Royal Oak". According to local legends it was renamed "the Scotch Piper" in honour of an injured Scottish piper connected with the Jacobite Rebellion in the 18th century, who visited the inn. Maghull
Maghull ( ) is a town and civil parish in Sefton, Merseyside (historically a part of Lancashire). The town is north of Liverpool and west of Kirkby. The area also contains Ashworth Hospital. Maghull had a population of 20,444 at the 2011 Census. Housing in the town is almost entirely a 20th-century settlement of semi-detached and detached housing although remains of the original town do exist. The town has had an elected council since the Local Government Act 1894 when the government set up a network of local governance across England. Following the Local Government Act 1974, the council changed its name from a parish to a town council. Etymology It has been proposed by Dr Eilert Ekwall that the name Maghull may have been derived from the Celtic word ''*magos'' referring to a plain or field, and the Old English ''halh'' referring to a corner or nook, giving the meaning of a "flat land in a bend". The Metropolitan Borough of Sefton is a metropolitan borough of Merseyside, England. It was formed on 1 April 1974, by the amalgamation of the county boroughs of Bootle and Southport, the municipal borough of Crosby, the urban districts of Formby and Litherland, and part of West Lancashire Rural District. It consists of a coastal strip of land on the Irish Sea which extends from Southport in the north to Bootle in the south, and an inland part to Maghull in the south-east, bounded by the city of Liverpool to the south, the Metropolitan Borough of Knowsley to the south-east, and West Lancashire to the east. A5147 Road
The A5147 is a road in northern England that runs from Maghull in Merseyside to Scarisbrick in Lancashire. Route Merseyside It begins off the A59 road in Maghull, where it is called Liverpool Road North. After leaving the town, it crosses over the Leeds and Liverpool Canal in Lydiate. It passes the Scotch Piper Inn before entering Lancashire at Downholland Cross. Lancashire It crosses over the canal twice more, then proceeds onto Haskayne and Halsall, passing through open countryside, before terminating at its junction with the A570 road in Scarisbrick. Ince Blundell is a village and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton in the ceremonial county of Merseyside and historic county of Lancashire, England. It is situated to the north of Liverpool on the A565 road and to the east of the village of Hightown. There are two associated hamlets of Lady Green and Carr Houses. History Ince Blundell is probably the oldest settlement within the Borough of Sefton. The name Ince comes from ''Hinne'' a Celtic word meaning "island in the marsh". This name bears evidence to Ince lying on a sandy ridge in the Alt valley, a place that in the past had been marshland.
