Louisiana State Senate
The Louisiana State Senate (french: Sénat de Louisiane) is the upper house of the state legislature of Louisiana. All senators serve four-year terms and are assigned to multiple committees. Composition The Louisiana State Senate is composed of 39 senators elected from single-member districts from across the state of Louisiana by the electors thereof. Senators must be a qualified elector (registered voter), be at least eighteen years of age, be domiciled in their district for at least one year, and must have been a resident of the state for at least two years. The senate is the judge of its members' qualifications and elections. All candidates for a senate seat in a district run in a nonpartisan blanket primary and in a runoff if necessary. Elections to the Senate occur every four years and senators are limited to three four-year terms (12 years). If a seat is vacated early during a term then it will be filled in a special election. Louisiana's 6th State Senate District
Louisiana's 6th State Senate district is one of 39 districts in the Louisiana State Senate. It has been represented by Republican Bodi White since 2012. Geography District 6 snakes along a portion of Louisiana's Florida Parishes, including parts of East Baton Rouge Parish outside of Baton Rouge and smaller sections of Livingston, St. Helena, and Tangipahoa Parishes. The district covers some or all of Ponchatoula, Hammond, and Central, as well as a small part of Lake Pontchartrain. Louisiana's 5th State Senate district is one of 39 districts in the Louisiana State Senate. It had previously been represented by Democrat Karen Carter Peterson since a 2010 special election to replace resigning fellow Democrat Cheryl Gray Evans until her resignation in April 2022. It is currently the most Democratic-leaning district in the Senate. Geography District 5 is primarily located in New Orleans, including parts of Carrollton, the Garden District, Mid-City New Orleans, and Uptown New Orleans, stretching to also cover a small part of Jefferson Parish. The district overlaps with Louisiana's 1st and 2nd congressional districts, and with the 82nd, 91st, 93rd, 97th, and 98th districts of the Louisiana House of Representatives. 2019 Louisiana State Senate Election
The 2019 Louisiana State Senate election was held on October 12, 2019, with runoff elections held on November 16, 2019. All 39 seats in the Louisiana State Senate were up for election to four-year terms. Under the Louisiana primary system, all candidates appeared on the same ballot, regardless of party. Five districts held runoff elections due to no candidate receiving a majority of the vote in the general election.
